Hi,
I’m looking for a way to play a sound effect through a speaker that plays when triggered by either a light switch, or smartthings light on command (like a motion sensor for example). Has anyone ever attempted this? Arduino perhaps? I’m not experienced in programming custom devices in ST but i’m willing to learn.
Thanks for any advice.
I found this, but it requires a physical switch whereas I’d like a “software” switch. Maybe this could be coupled with an arduino type board to work?
If I understand your question, you can do this with any DNLA speaker. People use them for voice notifications when someone arrives home, or when the laundry is done, etc. and for chimes when a door is opened. The light switch is no different it just becomes the trigger event.
I suggest you take a look at the quick browse lists in the community – created wiki in the project report section for the list for both “alerts and notifications“ and maybe for the list for voice. You should find quite a few options there.

Also, you might be able to use the Dome Chime. $49 And comes with 10 built-in sounds, including the chime. It is a Z wave device and you can trigger it with anything that smartthings controls, including a light switch. There’s a how to article in the community – created wiki on door chimes that covers that and some other options. In that case it’s typically an open/close door sensor that acts as the trigger, but it could definitely be a light switch instead.
That would probably be the fastest, simplest way, easier even then using the speaker. But you’re limited to the sounds that come with it.
