SONOFF Orb-DIM Matter Over WiFi Dimmer
SONOFF Orb-ZBDIM Zigbee Dimmer
Sonoff claims that Matter works with Smartthings natively while their Zigbee dimmers needs their hub. It doesn’t seem right but better to ask.
I’m leaning more towards Zigbee (I have a few battery Zigbee sensors) and I’m also worried about WIFI devices dropping out. Will Zigbee be a problem? Would you recommend Matter for peace of mind?
If you’re already running a v2 hub and aren’t trying to integrate with other systems I would go with Zigbee, personally. It’s not quite as future-proof (WiFi and Matter aren’t going away anytime soon) but it’s not losing support the way Z-Wave is. My Sonoff Zigbee devices have connected directly to the v2 and v3 hubs without a hitch. If you use the Matter dimmer then you have to integrate it through some outside connection (I’m not very familiar with this so someone else can chime in on that). The Zigbee device will also continue functioning locally in the event of a network outage, not sure if Matter over WiFi can - probably depends on a lot of other details of your setup.
Matter is a local controlling protocol by definition.
Sonoff devices often have features that work exclusively in the eWeLink app. With Matter, you have multi-admin support, allowing you to manage advanced features through eWeLink and use the device via SmartThings simultaneously. However, not all features are available to SmartThings via Matter; sometimes you will only have basic functionality.
For me, the "problem " with wifi is that is not a mesh protocol, so you will have to guarantee wifi coverage for devices. Also, in theory wifi devices can raise concerns about network security.
Zigbee or Thread don’t talk directly to the world, they depend on the TBR/hub.
