Question for the group: I have non-Samsung Mesh WiFi and three SmartThings Stations supporting devices on WiFi, Zigbee, and Matter. (No Z-Wave) I see that Routines for Matter devices run locally, but not for WiFi. If I add an Aeotec V3 hub or SmartThings V3 hub, will I get more local execution? If so, which should I buy? Which has the longer life-span? I am leaning toward Aeotec since Samsung no longer manufactures hubs. Thanks for your comments!
If the WiFi devices are Matter over WiFi they will be local, if they are WiFi but they use a cloud integration they will not.
The Aeotec or STv3 will not provide more local options other than allowing Z-Wave devices.
Thanks very much! I replaced Samsung combo Mesh WiFi/SmartThings hubs with this setup to get more router functionality and speed and because Samsung stopped issuing updates for those devices and did not add Matter capabilities as it did with V3 hubs. Sounds like I have the most efficient configuration possible, given the non-Matter Wifi devices. I have started replacing devices with newer Matter devices as that seems to be the future. I’ve already replaced Z-Wave switches. Is Z-Wave going away? There is no Z-Wave support in the SmartThings Stations.
I’ve not mentioned that for very specific non-Matter WiFi devices there might be local Edge drivers, but some are already abandoned like the ones for Shelly or TP-Link devices so YMMV.
Also, Home Assistant may have local integrations for some of your devices and can bridge them via Matter so they’ll be local to SmartThings too. But that requires an extra hub like the HA Green or similar. It might be cheaper and easier to just replace some devices.
Sadly, it sure appears that is the case…
Zwave itself is not going away. But Samsung staff have said publicly that the SmartThings commitment going forward is to Zigbee and matter. Zwave Was not included in the most recent SmartThings hub, the station, nor in the most recent version of the dongle for Samsung televisions And appliances. Nor in any of the Samsung smart appliances and televisions with built-in hubs. Just Zigbee, WiFi, Matter over Thread, and Matter over WiFi.
So Z wave has a future, but probably not with SmartThings.
That doesn’t mean they’ll drop existing support, it just means don’t expect to see it in future SmartThings hubs.
