Since Halo took a shit. Is Nest the best option? Also, my understanding is that it is only smoke and nor carbon monoxide. Am I wrong?

I can’t speak to the quality of the Nest Protect but you’ll have a hard time getting anyone to endorse a Nest product right now. They’ve recently announced changes that will break integrations with 3rd party hubs and services, including SmartThings. It might be an awesome detector but folks in the SmartThings community are waiting to see if they will be able to integrate it into their smarthomes.

I just replaced the batteries in one of my Protects, not even a month ago, and is telling me that I have to replace them again
If you must buy Protects, buy the wired ones.
I have 2 Nest Protects for almost a year, and have had no problems with batteries.
However, I am very disappointed that Nest is moving away from IFTTT.
At this point, I think the best option is “dumb” smoke/CO detectors and a z-wave listener, like the Ecolink model
