Smoke detector with night/path light feature

Now that both Nest Protect and Halo Smart Smoke Detectors are discontinued are there any smoke detectors out there with a night/path light feature?

Unfortunately, the current UL standard makes it unlikely that you will find one as it was written in a weird way so that now the light is not allowed to turn off completely. (I said it was weird.)

Hopefully, they will eventually change that again, but for now I don’t think you’re going to see one at least in the US.

If you really want a ceiling mounted battery powered nightlight there are quite a few dumb ones that just use a built in motion sensor to trigger and that might be enough depending on the use case

I should add that if you want something smarter, the ring spot lights are expensive, but pretty nice. They have their own built-in motion sensor.

Anyway, this is an upgrade of the original Mr. Beam’s Smart lights. You have to get the ring bridge to control them, but then you can use them through Alexa routines and get some smartthings integration that way.

Of course, there are several other night lights that will integrate with smartthings, but if I recall correctly, all of those are Mains powered. One of the reasons that ring acquired Mr. Beams was because they had really good battery management.

Thanks, man. That’s good to know about the UL standard. I don’t really NEED this feature, just thought it was a nice add on. I like how dim the light is. All my lights will be connected via switches with motion sensors, so technically I could do the thing I want but I don’t think it will be as nice.

Do you have a lead on the “best” ST connected smoke detectors?

Sorry, I don’t put anything that could impact health or safety on smartthings. But the easiest way is to get whatever UL listed smoke detector you like and then use an acoustic listener.

If you have Z wave on your SmartThings account, the following is a good option:

There are some other options using other protocols, but I’m not up-to-date on what works with smartthings.

@Automated_House might know.

Well as far as I know, there are no smoke detectors that rely on ST connectivity for their first order functions so I have no problem with them being connected in the app for visibility. Ideally I could control the alarm via the app, to silence or trigger but not a deal breaker. Thanks again.

I have Frient smoke detectors. Not much to say about them…

Going to replace them with

… as soon as they are available. For no other reason than Matter over Thread.

I setup a Sensereo MS-1 a couple days ago to test. Pretty basic, but good so far. Important to note that it is design for the EU market and only has EN-14604 certification for that market. It does not have UL217 cert for North America.

Since we have interconnected Smoke/CO detectors, I use the Ecolink listener JD linked above.

Yeah those look nice. Will likely need some before they are available in the states. Also, I have been slow rolling my Matter devices because I still have the V2 SmartThings Hub for both nostalgic and stability reasons. The thing is a rock, and it is branded SmartThings—which is important to me

In our house, I’m using a Zooz ZEN55 Smoke & CO Detector Bridge (aka DC Signal Sensor) hooked up to run-of-the-mill interconnected Kidde smoke detectors. It has worked well on both the SmartThings v3 Hub and, currently, on a Z-Box Hub.

It is set up with routines to light up the place if the alarm goes off at night to facilitate easier egress–once one gets over the initial shock of smoke alarms screaming you awake!

But other sensors are more appropriate for gently lighting your way to the loo in the middle of the night, of course.

Also slow adopting Matter here. It may not be ready for Prime Time yet, IMHO, but sure looks promising in the long run.

The Z-Box is in use here probably mostly in reponse to current SmartThings ownership apparently abandoning Z-Wave, sadly.

Always nice seeing you check in here, Ben…

Home Monitor takes care of that.

If I understand what you’re saying, there are both Z wave and Zigbee smoke detectors available for use with smartthings. But I don’t know of any that have pathlights.
