SmartThings Partners with IKEA over Matter Bridge Integration

SmartThings Partners with IKEA to Offer Matter Bridge Integration (samsung.com)

Accessing IKEA devices in ST through the Dirigera Matter Bridge is great. Unlike Google Home, I’ve seen that ST makes Rodret and Stybar switches functional across the Matter bridge. Anything else special coming out of this partnership?

It’s standard Matter, nothing SmartThings specific. Google Home just does not support buttons at all, not cloud-based, not Matter.

We talked about it a bit in the Matter thread:

Thanks … understandable marketing blurb to attract people … but just wanted to check.

I guess it won’t be for a while, but one thing partnerships could perhaps do is avoid multiple thread networks?? (disclaimer I am no expert in this space! )

Regardless of partnerships they should just allow joining any Thread network, it’s a standard after all, there are methods to share credentials in Android and iOS and they all are members of the Thread Group alliance.

If they don’t is either because they don’t want to for marketing reasons or because technical interoperability is not quite there yet (but that’s why there’s an alliance and there are interoperability tests to get certified).

BTW, IKEA doesn’t have any Thread devices yet so the radio is probably disabled.

am very knowingly in the “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing” camp

Why Thread is Matter’s biggest problem right now - The Verge

Despite the article being 13 months old… we are exactly in the same situation regarding Thread border routers, each company creating their own Thread network and ignoring existing ones .

Thread 1.3 was going to push interoperability but that didn’t happen, now the hope is on Thread 1.4.
