SmartThings Hub Version 2.0

Hi Guys, eagerly waiting to buy Hub 2.0 since it was announced months back! I had signed up for the updates too. Can someone please send me the invite? I’d like to pre-order!!! Can’t wait to make my home smarter

any idea when this will be available for purchase IN Canada… so there are no Duty, Taxes, Shipping, Exchange fees?

Pre ordered!!!
It would be great to know if the hybrid approach, will have an impact on the smartapp programming (e.g. when no internet available, cloud request will not throw an exception).

Anyhow, when the USBs and BLE are unlocked (guess delayed for stability) the flexibility will be awesome…

The first post in the following thread has links for pre-ordering:

I’m trying my best not ask for a timeline for the migration tool, but what range are we talking here? Under 4 quarters? or are we looking at more then 4 quarters?

It’s going to drive me nuts to wait for it, and would likely not wait if I’m looking at over year of waiting and wondering. If it’s under a year I’ll suck it up and wait and save myself a weekend of frustrating work, the weeks of retuning my set up to work correctly, and most importantly avoid losing all the buy in I’ve finally got from my wife.

And you go ahead and ask anyway?? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Let me put my thoughts this way…

SmartThings has known what their design of Hub V2 was since before it was announced… So well over 9 months, I’m sure.

But they haven’t been able to put a parallel project team together to solve the migration problem in that same timeline.

So either it’s a really really difficult problem, and/or they figure that with enough incremental incentives a migration tool will eventually no longer be necessary to convince you to upgrade. The first batch of Hub V2 will sell themselves due to pent up demand, then more and more discounts can be offered to Hub V1 owners until we all just give in.

Of course, device migration is also necessary if your Hub V1 or V2 dies or is stolen… the failure rate surely must not be zero. So a “migration tool” is still valuable even for swapping out Hub V2 with another Hub V2 – but, just perhaps, just maybe that problem is easier to solve due to the new hardware and firmware.

@Ben, didn’t get the customer appreciation pack link. I’ve been a loyal user - even created an x10 bridge using the shield. Can you get the link to me somehow. No idea why it wouldn’t have already come?

Thx.

Pre-ordered via Amazon! I am excited! Glad batteries will be included!

One more question…
What color do the front LEDs (mostly) stay at? I had to cover up my Hue Bridge because it’s in my bedroom and blue light is bad for getting to sleep.

Very good point – and probably too late for the Hub V2 hardware … but it sure would be a nice firmware option, please, please, to disable the LEDs! Everything glows too much these days.

Taping over them is so … gauche. And not in a good way, like “Gauchat”.

You can get stick on dimmer dots in either black, silver, or white that work pretty well. They typically block about 80% at the light LED and change the color. Some people use two, first a black one and then a white or silver one over the top of that. Probably best not to use the silver ones on an RF device. But the white or black should be fine.

These typically come in two versions: regular which dims the LED about 50%, so you can still see the indicator light, and black out, which blocks about 90% of the light. Read the descriptions carefully so you get the version you want.

There are a number of different brands, this is just an example:

And I spent hours with my hole punch and black electrical tapes. They do make everything.

@ajpri I PM’ed him with a custom 3 D printed “plug” that would be easy to model and print. By creating different thickness layers in the print it would be easy to control how much light passed through. Plus colors are plentiful in the filament.

Eh, it’s all good. I have 35 devices and have no issue moving over.

I’ve been trying my hardest not to do to ST’s what I get everyday working for a software company, obviously I failed and fell to the dark side of asking for timelines

You make a good point that they probably lacked the resources for a full team dedicated 100% toward the migration tool, and I understand that especially considering how many people they have onboard in the last year, which itself is a huge burden on senior employees. We’ll be seeing the fruits of the teams labor soon enough I’m sure of that. HUB V2, redesigned mobile app, Echo integration, and someday a migration tool.

We’re just now seeing the first shot of the many “cannons” I’m guessing the team has worked on loading. I’m excited for what future holds for SmartThings. :grinning:

Fantastic News @Ben - Thank You for the offer email, i will have to locate a US user who’s house i can order one too who will forward it to me  wahooo

When people discuss US vs UK zwave devices not working together does this mean i should get another US hub just like my V1… i currently have connected the following, would a UK Hub have issues with any of these or any particular future products:

1 US Ultimate Harmony Home Hub & Remote
1 US Philips Hue Bridge/Hub
4 Hue Lux Bulbs
1 Hue GU10 Bulb
2 Hue Light Strip
1 FLS Ballas LED Strip
2 Smartsense Motion
2 Smartsense Presence
1 Smartsense Open/Close
1 Smartsense Temp/Humidity
3 US Ubi’s

I also plan to buy very soon:

6 Somfy RTS tilt motors & ZRTSI-II Bridge
1 Fortezz Mimolite (For Doorbell/Intercom)
3 Sonos Play1’s
1 Sonos PlayBar
1 Roomba & Thinking Cleaner Plate
4 Intergratable ZPT Cameras (When Announced)

  • Many More Smartsense Sensors
  • Many More Hue Bulbs & Strips

So is it in my interest to keep with my trend and import a US model of V2 or will a UK version manage all these fine ???

The only reason i ask is because 99% of all Products available now are US based, but when UK smart sockets / dimmers become available will they be un-workable with a US hub? Or is the issue more with US products working on a UK hub?

Cheers kyle

Unless ST suddenly releases a dual-frequency version of the Hub Z-Wave module(s), UK and US are literally not on the same wavelength (do you have that expression over the pond… It means “don’t quite understand each other”).

Unless you want to continue to run an illegal import operation :see_no_evil:, then I suggest you are an excellent candidate to wait for Hub V2 UK version.

Or stick with ZigBee, WiFi, (and Bluetooth) which are universally the same frequency in every country.

As NWA once sang " F*** The Police, Coming Straight From The Underground " hahahaha i joke i joke i kid i kid

Yeah " Not on the same WaveLength is how I describe my life long best mate, hes kind of in a different dimension at times"

As for the ZWave issue ARGHHHHHH (Annoying) so if I was to purchase a UK Hub would a mimolite be defunct? And would anything else from the above list i may have missed be defunct for me . . . I think most are zigbee or wifi . . .

I just feel getting a UK Hub will really limit me as the UK is sooo far behind . . . I mean jesus, im soooo far behind most of you, but in the uk im classed as a revolutionary  haha

-------------/

Update:

Saying that just checked out MimoLite and it states:
Frequency Range: 908.4MHz (US); 868.4MHz (EU)

So for example what products cant a UK hub exactly work with haha

That may or may not imply the Mimolite is dual frequency (or configurable). I wouldn’t be surprised if it is not… They may ship different versions by country, just like Hubs.

Take a look at the detailed specs of ever device?

New to smartthings, I’ve been going back and fourth between buying a vera edge or v2 hub. Now thats it’s available I’m definitely gonna pik one up. This community is great from what I’ve seen so far.

Just wondering what happens to existing to smart apps or programs like the dsc alarm server now that we have local processing? Will anything need to be rewritten? Will existing apps that run in the cloud automatically run local now? Thx
