Smart Things arrives tomorrow! Have a few more questions (Project)

So I’ve done some research and I think most of what I want to accomplish can be done with the SmartThings platform. I’ve decided I’m going to use Nest and SmartThings as my home automation platform the best that I can.

Can the following ideas be completed with smartthings? and if so how hard will all of this be to setup? I’m trying to automate my house as much as possible. I understand that August, Arlo, and Canary are not yet compatible with Smart Things but I have them automated independently so far.

The devices that I currently own are

Harmony Ultimate Home
Phillip Hue Lights
2 Ring Doorbells
Wemo Light Switches
Wemo Plugs
SmartThings Hub v2
Presence Sensors v2
5 Outdoor/Indoor Motion Detectors
7 Sonos Speakers
4 Canary’s (In-Home Cameras)
5 Arlo Outdoor Cameras
4 Awair Air Quality Sensors
1 Luna Smart Bed Matress Cover
2 Roombas with Thinking Cleaner
3 August Door Locks

Good Bye (Based on Two Presence Sensors)

()Lock Doors
Turn off all Phillip Hue lights
Turn off entertainment center
Turn off Master Bed Sonos, Master Bath Sonos, Gym Sonos, Guest Bath Sonos.
(
)Arm Canary and Arlo Security Cameras
Arm in-door motion sensors, door sensors, and window sensors
Send a Good Bye notification to each phone.
Set Nest to Away

Good Bye Activites

If motion is detected while Good Bye is activated pulse the phillip hue lights red until motion stops.
If motion is detected while Good Bye is activated play a siren sound on the sonos.
Send a notification if motion is detected in the house while Good Bye is activated.

Welcome (Based on Presence Sensor)

()Unlock Front and Side Door
Turn on all Phillip Hue lights after sunset
Turn on Master Bed Sonos, Master Bath Sonos, Gym Sonos, and Guest Bath Sonos.
(
)Disarm Canary and Arlo Security Cameras
Play a welcome greeting upon entry on the sonos.
Set Nest to home.

Good Night (Button Activated)

Arm in-door motion sensors, door sensors, and window sensors
Set an Alarm on the Master Bedroom Sonos for set time.

Good Night Activites

If motion is detected while Good Night is activated pulse the phillip hue lights red until motion stops.
If motion is detected while Good Night is activated play a siren sound on the sonos.
Send a notification if motion is detected in the house while Good Night is activated.

Good Morning (Button Press or Luna Activated)

Turn on the TV, and AV received at 5:00am for local news
Turn on and Dim Kitchen Light, Foyer Light, and Master Bed Room light until sunrise.

Turn on side door light after sunset if motion is detected.
Turn on back door light after sunset if motion is detected.
If doors or windows are opened announce wich door or windom is opened on the sonos.

Thanks

What brand/model are the motion sensors?

Also, unlike some other controllers, smartthings does not have the concept of “arming” a motion sensor.

Instead, you activate individual rules based on various conditions. So if you want to get a text when the motion sensor goes off when you’re away from the house, you activate the rule that sends you a text when the motion sensor goes off based on the presence sensor being away.

This means you could actually have two rules for the same motion sensor, one of which is active, and the other is inactive, depending on exactly what’s happening.

But the restrictions are applied to the rule. Not to the motion sensor itself. So in that sense the motion sensor is always “armed” but there may not be any active rule that is paying attention to it.

This is true for all devices in a SmartThings installation. You activate or deactivate the rules. Not the devices.

I just wanted to mention that because it can be quite confusing to people coming from other systems where you do “disarm” individual device, meaning that the controller completely ignores it. Here the controller always gets the alert from the device, but there may not be an active rule/smartapp running to respond to it.

This also means that the motion sensor alerts will show in your activity logs even if there was no active rule to respond to them.

Anyway, in Smartthings you will “arm” the smart home monitor or some other alarm smartapp, not the individual devices. I hope that’s clear.

Looking quickly over your items there Shane, I’d say that just about everything should be do-able.

You’ll use ‘Routines’ to run the specific things you want to happen at Good Night or Good bye, etc. There’s lots of options in there for doing what you want to do.

The rest of the stuff should be doable with smart apps.

Smartthings does some with a poor man’s alarm system built into the Smart Home Monitor that can be armed or disarmed via routines. However, I quickly found that to be lacking some critical things… the most important thing being no delay before the alarm went off.

Look for the smartapp ‘Smart Alarm’ instead.

Also, there is currently no integration with Ring.

The Luna integration will be via IFTTT.

I’m not sure about the air-quality sensors, search the forums to see if anybody’s using them.

Also, what devices are involved in “start coffee”?

We should note that the WeMo integration is complicated. Some cases work much better than others. Some are still in beta. Some worked for a while and now don’t work. The WeMo insight plugs are not supported.

Search the forums for more information on how people are using wemo devices.
