Hi all. I have a smart wall light switch. I’m having an issue connecting it. I have 2 wires that come out of my electrical box. 1 black and 1 white. On the switch, there are 4 wires. Green, I know is ground. There is a black, red and white. I’m guessing black to black, white to white. Where does the red go? [image]

Don’t guess. US code does not mandate wire color in most instances and people can and do use almost any color for anything just depending on what spools they have in the toolbox at the end of the day. You need to map the circuit. There are tools to do this with. If you haven’t worked with electrical systems before, and you live near a Home Depot, many of them have a free workshop on installing a light switch or installing a three-way switch. They won’t cover smart switches, but you will learn about circuits and tools and that will be helpful. Otherwise bring in an electrician.

Also, you may already know this, but assuming that is the Switch made by Hidin Tech ( and then usually rebranded by someone else) , it doesn’t work with SmartThings.

Thank you, I’m in Canada, but I’ll guess it’s the same. I think I’ll get someone in, I do it I’ll end up burning my house down.

[image] Dandy: I think I’ll get someone in, I do it I’ll end up burning my house down. The instructions that came with your smart switch should explain how to install it. It likely says that white goes to neutral, black to line, and red to load. However, whoever you get in will then tell you that the supply from the breaker goes into the fixture and has the hot leg running down to the switch and back, leaving no neutral in the box. If that’s the case you’ll need to find a smart switch that doesn’t require a neutral. If you can identify one that meets your needs you might want to have it on hand when the electrician shows up so (s)he can install whichever switch works.

Thank you, the electrician told me I had no neutral wire. But I might be able to add the white from switch to the ground wire. Thanks for help. I’ll have the EMT and Fire Department on standby.

Don’t try to use the ground wire and the neutral wire interchangeably. It’s a bad idea. [image] FAQ: Neutral and Ground Wires are not Interchangeable FAQ Continuing the discussion from Current Device Deals & Best Prices: They are both wires, but they serve very different purposes in a residential home circuit. One is grounded and one is grounding. If most of your experience has been with battery operated devices, or in a physics lab, you are generally working with direct-current, and,the ground and the neutral may well work in a very similar way. In these environments you do sometimes hear the statement that the ground and neutral are interchangeable. However, in a house, the ground will often be connected to a metal appliance such as a washing machine or a toaster, and normally carries very little current. Its purpose is to be used when there is a fault in the normal live circuit so that the extra current has someplace to go. The ne… It may be possible to fish up a neutral wire from a nearby outlet, but that’s a very different process. [image] Automated Switches: What should my wiring look like? (US Version) FAQ So you want an automated hardwired light switch, but you’re not sure where to start. Well you’re in the right place. The most common requirement of any hardwired automated light switch is a neutral wire. Yes, there are a few…(read very, very, very few) switches that don’t require a neutral, but those will limit you to incandescent only. For those of us using LED, Fluorescent or some other energy efficient bulbs under 20w a neutral is REQUIRED! So what does this look like? [image] This is a diagram of a switch with the neutral run directly to the light. This is not good for automated hardwired light switchs and i would HIGHLY recommend that if you want to automate the light, contact an electrician and have them pull a neutral for you. It’s not as expensive as you think and will save you…

Here are some other options if you don’t have a neutral at the switch: [image] FAQ: SmartThings-Compatible Switches that Don’t Require Neutral (US, 2019) FAQ hello I am new to posting on smarttings forum, I have been a smart home user for several years, but I am mostly a grateful reader of the site. But recently I have been looking for some new non neutral switches do to my past intermatic switches are starting to fail. After reading many postings I started to feel like i was swimming in information, but i was coming up with little information. I was wondering if a list could be put together of non neutral switches? Makes models and if they and be used in 3 way setups? So far all i have found is lutron 1000w z-wave switch only works with incandescents Lutron caseta switches with a bridge only
