This is a clear sign that smart home market is stagnant. The other day every media outlet was complaining about the GE Cs ridiculous reset process, now they are complaining about Google changing the Google Home name. Can someone give these bored tech reviewers something to do? LOL
It’s a silly article because the switch to the nest name was already discussed previously, and name confusion already existed between, for example, “Google home“ and “google Home hub.” So, Meh.
But that doesn’t have anything to do with the industry as a whole, which is rapidly expanding in terms of plug-and-play consumer products.
There’s also a lot of interesting behind-the-scenes deep tech issues going on, one clear example being what Apple is introducing with iOS 13 for both cameras and routers.
It’s just that these particular tech reviewers don’t know how to review either of those kinds of trends.
But that has more to do with the state of blogs than the state of the Smart Home market, IMO.
I know, Samsung needs to release their SmartThings camera to give these guys and gals something to write about. Engadget picked up the “news” too…

Stagnant is probably not an inaccurate term.
SmartThings has been on the market for 6 years.
The current growth rate of the SmartThings Users Group on Facebook is currently pegged at 40% per year.
OK - That’s a particular unique sample (SmartThings engaged users + Facebook?) and, well, what “non-stagnant” industry should we compare to?
Alexa units are projected to grow 80% from 2018 to 2019 (though from a much larger base).
So… 40% vs 80%? Perhaps SmartThings isn’t doing that badly after all. Nor the “Smart Home Market” in general…
yeah what is stagnant is the constant blog regurgitation on the internet. The same “news” story gets posted 50,000 times in 50,000 places.
