Smappee (and in particular, Solar version)

So today I added a smappee plug in smart things through the smappee smart app. The plugs work perfectly with smart things.

Almost instantaneous switching when switching the plug in smart things.

A 3 pack of these plugs go cheap too!

Yes they work fine. I find the range poor and obviously these plugs are state less devices. Only advantage is that they are cheap.

I use a repeater to help the range problems.

Shame that they do not work with homeeasy kit. It looks almost identical and pretty sure made by the same people. I have lots of kit from the past including repeaters.

I am considering getting a Solar Smappee once I get a Tesla Powerwall and Tesla solar roof tiles installed as part of a loft conversion.

Having looked at the Smappee products I also saw that they do an add-on to monitor water and gas usage as well. Unfortunately their approach to monitoring water usage seems completely incompatible with at least the typical UK setup.

Here in the UK not everyone has a water meter - yet, but for those that do the majority seem to be located just at the edge of your property under the public footpath. This represents several problems.

  1. It is too far for the length of cables Smappee provide and Smappee will not provide extension cables or details on how to make ones, they use a special connector.
  2. If you located the Smappee box nearer the water meter its radio signal would not reach the Electrical/Solar master monitor, and of course it would be outside your house walls or even underground further reducing the distance a wireless signal could reach.
  3. The water companies are generally not going to be happy with you attaching the sensor to the meter even though this does NOT interfere with the meter and does not require modifying the meter. (The sensor is either an optical reader you stick on top, or a magnetic sensor that would fit a special hole that suitable meters provide specifically for this.)

A different approach some other systems take is to ‘listen’ to the flow of water although this is likely to be rather inaccurate. Another option is to fit a second water meter at your expense on your property near to your electrical supply so it can be reached using the standard short cable.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Personally I feel they should provide their own flow-meter that yes would then require a plumber to fit, however this could be fitted adjacent to your stop-cock. Yes this approach would cost more but would at least then be possible.

I added a second water meter, but only for the outside taps, which is the area most likely to be affected by water leaks/burst pipes…something the smappee gas/water can detect.

Just make sure your meter is WRAS approved, and choose one that gives you the optical or pulse feedback that the smappee cable requires. Smappee supplies one pulse and one optical cable in the box, so can read two meters. I used pulse on my gas meter, optical on the water meter.

Also, the pulse cable can be lengthened if needed. I made my own extension cable after buying a bulk load of the same specialist connectors that Smappee uses.

Could you provide details of the connectors and where you got them? Perhaps I could make my own extension cable.

Smappee even tried to claim that it would not support a longer cable which is something I did not believe, they would not provide details of the connectors either. They were very unhelpful.

Sure. You will need Micro Power 3mm connectors, made by Pro Power and supplied by CPC.

I wouldn’t expect a company to reveal details of their component parts from a helpdesk - their support is pretty good by comparison to most I have dealt with. I’m sure they don’t want to encourage lots of people extending their cables and then needing support because their device doesn’t work any more.

To make one patch cable you need:
1x Receptacle 5740-1041
1x Plug 5740-2041
4x male crimps 5741-2001
4x female crimps 5742-2001

With minimum order quantities this will come to about £25 inc VAT, plus you will need some suitable cable to use. Also note the magnetic/pulse cable should be ok to extend, but you are less likely to succeed with the optical cable, presumably as the extra voltage drop is likely to render the sensors inoperative.

My initial reason for making up the cable was so i could pass it through a narrow hole. Smappee confirmed it was ok to extend the magnetic/pulse cable, but recommended to still try and keep it as short as possible.

Sorry to revive such an old thread but can anyone confirm if the smappee works well in Smartthings?

I just want to get realtime usage of the entire house consumption and my solar generation so I can control devices to turn on/off if consumption is higher than solar generation. I already have smart plugs and an Aeon energy meter but the one I have is GEN1 and doesn’t work with solar

Whilst it does work to an extent, it won’t give you real-time control as it seems to only update every five minutes, via a cloud connection.

That’s a real shame…I dug out my smappee and reconnected it, as having switched suppliers my meter is now ‘dumb’ again and thought i may be able to do some clever things within smartthings as now i have a bunch of energy monitoring switches too…

But as you mentioned the delay from smappee back to smartthings with regards the power usage is 5-10 minutes behind :frowning:
Does the community know if the integration was created by Smartthings or Smappee? It’d be nice if it could talk directly to the smappee hub rather than having to use the internet…

As an aside the Smappee app appears to be able to get real time info whether I’m online locally or remote…so the info is there - its just a mechanism for polling I guess?

Sorry for another dug. Just install SmartThings and want to connect to my existing smappee. I use US version of SmartThings and register location in Thailand. Found on some YouTube that smappee will be listed under energy monitor, but I couldn’t find in both new and classic app. Do I miss anything?

You can poll it locally. I wrote a python script that runs every minute to get as close to real time as I would need to get.

Does someone knows how to setup Smappee via New Smartthings App?
Smappee energy used to listed on marketplace on Classic ST App, but since the app will be sunset the upcoming months, is it be officially supported for new ST app?
