This is obviously a long shot, because the whole point of websites like Reddit is posting by anonymity. There’s no NEW information here than what you can get from all the recent online articles, and the user is new on Reddit.
But still…
Most likely a disgruntled employee or ex employee, but there is truth behind every rumor to some point, right 
I would be furious if my 7 protects and 4 Nest thermostats became paperweights.
It’s bad enough we have a paperweight in our ST hubs most of the time.
But… I don’t think that person speaks for everyone at Nest and I’m actually guessing they are not even a current employee there.
Well, they will work locally. Obviously, the app would become useless, but Nest has assets (huge customer base, data, talented staff (hopefully still left).
I could see Google maybe selling them off and someone else buying them in an attempt to revive them. Who knows…
