Samsung Screens Everywhere

Remember when they said they will continue to ship chargers with phones and a year later they stopped?

Remember when turning on the TV was not a wall of ads?

I don’t believe it for one second.

They say that now and in 3 years, you’ll have an offer on Tide as the detergent dispenser is empty.

If we are lucky.

I find Samsung’s vision completely alien.

The only control we use on the fridge/freezer is the button to turn the open door alarm off. We use one programme on the washing machine over 95% of the time, and have only ever used one programme on the dryer. We don’t even have a timer on the oven. We rarely use anything but maximum heat on the microwave and use nothing but the timer. We never use displays or the mobile app to control anything on a daily basis. The idea of using the TV to control anything is too ridiculous for words. We have pretty much stopped using voice assistants, and the map view is a bad joke and really of no interest anyway. We don’t use any of Samsung’s ‘Life Services’ because we’d rather they mind their own business.

I would really like to have an AI that recognizes patterns in our daily routines and then suggests suitable automations.

We don’t use voice control anymore and we might have used it only for about two weeks. My wife rarely uses the app, and I mainly use it for programming routines, managing devices and monitoring. Wall switches and buttons are used more frequently, but in the end, it’s the routines/sensors that do most of the work.

A while ago, I used “logcat” to log our activity for three hours and fed the data to ChatGPT, asking: do you recognize a pattern? That turned out to be surprisingly insightful. It generated statistics showing which devices were used when, how long certain lights were on, and so on.

That was just a bit of experimentation and if I had provided more information and asked more targeted questions, the answers might have been even more helpful.

Every time we come home, the house is set to a predefined state. Lately, I’ve noticed that I always dim a certain lamp after arriving and keep telling myself I should update the routine accordingly when I get the chance. Tomorrow…

That would be a job for AI (pattern recognition) and from what I’ve heard, they are working on it.

These “life services” as they are, are pretty useless for us, though.
