Recommendations for Smart Speakers?

The Matter specification doesn’t include smart speakers as “Matter devices,” so that’s not it, (For example, using matter doesn’t give you a way for an Alexa device to control an Apple HomePod mini, even though both devices are matter controllers.)

Instead, it’s likely using the same architecture that allowed a Samsung phone to use both Bixby and Google Assistant. They’re just including support for each voice assistant in one device.

Nice find! :sunglasses:

Also this:

Harman/kardon Virtuo will launch during 2024 at a price yet to be announced.

I was thinking that they would be added to ST as a Matter device and then also added to Alexa as a Matter device with the multi admin function.

Can’t be done under the current specification. The virtuo doesn’t fit any of the existing “matter device“ types. (“Matter device“ has a specific meaning in a matter context: it’s an end device that can be controlled by a “matter controller.” But a controller is not itself a “matter device.” That’s why at the time of this posting you can’t use an echo device or a SmartThings hub to change the volume on an Apple HomePod mini, even though all three are certified for matter. Because all three are certified as “matter controllers,” not “matter devices.”)

Here are the current “matter devices”:

Right now, Matter will support lighting products (plugs, lightbulbs, switches, etc., door locks, thermostats and HVAC controllers, blinds and shades, home security sensors (such as door and window sensors, motion sensors, etc.), and televisions and streaming video players.

“Smart speakers” are on the roadmap to be eventually added to this specification, but they aren’t there yet.

The Virtuo has been certified as a “matter controller,“ not a “matter device,” so it isn’t available for the multi admin process.

I think the bottom line is that it is a smart speaker that supports Alexa and Bigsby voice assistants simultaneously, and is compatible with Airplay and Chromecast. It has Zigbee, Thread and Wi-Fi and the line diagram of the case says ‘Ethernet’ on it. It has an integrated SmartThings hub. What other functionality it may have as a Zigbee or Matter device I don’t know.

I have to say that if you are going to stick a SmartThings hub inside something else, this sounds like by far the most sensible place to put one so far. I rather fear that the price tag may make my eyes bleed though.

So I’m guessing the Harman Kardon Virtuo speaker is about to launch now, it has already received the IF Design Award. Weirdly enough, the English website says the product’s target regions are North and South America only, while the German version mentions that it’ll be launched globally (I hope the latter is true). Both also mention the launch date as 2023, which seems odd since the product still hasn’t been released (or am I missing something?)

German version: iF Design - HK Virtuo
English version: iF Design - Harman Kardon Virtuo

Some further details on (potential) specs are available on EnergyStar’s website.
Again, for whatever reason, it is mentioned that the product was launched on June 30th, 2023.

The Virtuo model was:

FCC certified late June 2023. That would allow it to be sent out for press reviews and beta testing.

https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/APIHKVIRTUO/6947025

Zigbee certified in September 2023. That would allow it to use the Zigbee logo.

About two weeks later, it was certified for matter.

Preleased to some Korean media outlets for pre-release review in February 2024, with a target release date of “first half of 2024”

But not yet available for general sale.

Just a quick follow-up:

So I ended up getting the Samsung Music Frame speaker because it has pretty much everything I was looking for. It integrates with SmartThings nicely and has Alexa on board (it lacks Bixby, at least here in Europe, but I can live with that), so it’s a great hybrid device doubling as a soundbar/AV device (the sound is surprisingly well-balanced and it gets extremely loud considering its size) and a smart speaker. I’ve had it for almost a week now and haven’t had any issues (so far, fingers crossed ) On top of that it blends into its surroundings nicely since it looks like an ordinary picture frame from the front.

Again, thanks for everyone’s help!

why does my speaker need intelligence? asking for a friend.

I have no idea. You made it look like I said that, but it was actually part of the article being linked to.

Typically, though, for a Smart speaker, it would be better at understanding what you said and maybe answering questions.
