Outlets with power current monitoring (for alerting on Washer)

Hello Community,

I’m hoping you can help recommend to me a good power outlet that works with SmartThings and provides energy usage data so that I can use it to set up an alert for when my washer is done with the cycle. Unfortunately, I’ve thus far bought several that advertise “Monitor energy usage” but don’t actually have power monitoring and are just simple on/off switches. I’ve also found some that have power usage in their native app (such as the Sengled outlets) but don’t when linked to SmartThings.
I’ve tried switching the device type in the IDE to “Zigbee Metering Plug” but that didn’t make a difference. I’d rather not spend $40-$50

I was able to set one up pretty reliably with the dryer using vibration and the multipurpose sensor, but that doesn’t seem to work as well for my washer.

TIA!

What locale, abs and what power requirements do you have for your washer? Different devices are available in different geographies…

The Sengled outlet may need a custom DTH to get energy reporting to work, but the one I searched for doesn’t support energy reporting.

What region do you live in?

I’m in USA, and my washer is <15amps (Type B Outlet)

The Sengled app has a “power usage” feature, but it doesn’t appear to be true energy reporting, it seems to instead do a rough calculation based on on/off time. I tried modifying the device handler but didn’t make a difference there.

Honestly, I just ended up buying a smartthings official smartplug so that I didn’t have to deal with all the custom and workarounds. It was worth saving the headache for me.

I use an outlet from monopice and the zooz device handler for both my washer and sump pump.

I use this one for exactly your application…

Which one? There are several different ones, which is part of my concern :stuck_out_tongue:

The “Wifi Plug In Outlet for Smart Home”? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SMARTPLUG-GP-WOU019BBAWU-Outlet-SmartThings/dp/B07PY4YPTF/
Or the “Smart Outlet” https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SmartThings-Outlet-GP-U999SJVLDAA-Smart/dp/B07F96JB63/ ?

Apologies! I got the wifi one: https://www.samsung.com/us/smart-home/smartthings/outlets/smartthings-wifi-smart-plug-gp-wou019bbawu/

I think I actually got the other one as well for funsies, but I use the wifi one for my washing machine.
