Thanks much I confirm that NodeMCu worked for me.
I will put a link to the original post by kaiser.
Search in the forum is not so great and it was a struggle to find it .
I am all set and have the switch working with smarthings app.

Steve thanks for your help. I think the newer sonoff work only by flashing with NodeMCu. I was able to get it working. with the community support here I was ready to give up
Many thanks to the original developer @erocm1231 . great work.
@erocm1231 ā youāve done some great work on this project. Iāve been able to flash a number of Sonoff Basic and Sonoff TH16 devices using the NodeMCU process flawlessly. Youāre current TH code supports AM2301 and DS18B20, but unfortunately, I only purchsed the newer si7021. Do you have any plans to add this sensor to your list of supported sensors for the TH10/TH16?
Many thanks for sharing your binaries - itās very much appreciated.
One question, my sonoff basics show configure button with red dot when I acces device settings. Do You know what does it mean?
Thank You. Sorry for noob questions
Canāt remember exactly now i think it means youāve changed settings that need saving.
Clicking configure saves them i think.
Whatās the recommended youtube video to watch in action? There seems to be a lot. I am still debating using default, but I just ordered 8 of these, so I figured why not.
Edit:
One last question with the sonoff being flashed is there options to make the switch default state to on. I plan on putting these between my light switch and light, and I will need it to default on,
that way i can still control the light with the switch in case of internet problems.
Yes there is dafault on option
Is it ok to use jumper wires to connect (GND/GPIO 14) on Sonoff basic to my Leviton decora switch? Just trying to avoid soldering if at all possible.
@Scott2ya
I just setup 4 of basic sonoff switches last weekend and had some trouble. Thanks to some very helpful folks I was able to get it working.
Use this video for basically everything except flashing the firmware. ESPEasy flashing software referred in this video is does not work for newer sonoff. The firmware link and everything else is fine.
The video description has links. So its best not to view the embedded video but instead go to main you tube page for this video.
For flashing the firmware you should use NodeMCU. information on that available below. basically its a software that will take the firmware and push into the sonoff device through the FTDI. click the arrow link to the article by kaiser and it will show you a screen cap also.
This looked like a lot of steps but once get one working others just take like 10 minutes or so. With smartthings eco system you get a lot more integration with motion sensors etc and the reason for me flashing 4 of them.
please note that you need to add the smart app only once from the market place. one instance of app can confiture more than one switch. you will understand once you get to that step.
Hope this help you out.
Thanks for the reply.
OK, I am thoroughly confused. I donāt have my sonoffās yet, but will on Wednesday and would like to have a job aid to follow. I donāt mind piecing it together myself, but these directions donāt make sense to me. I shouldnāt have a problem with any of the physical stuff, connecting everything up to my laptop or doing any soldering if needed, wonāt be a problem, but from what you are telling meā¦
I do not download
ESP easy firmware: https://github.com/erocm123/SmartThinā¦
OR
Firmware image (to place in same folder as above after extraction): https://github.com/erocm123/SmartThinā¦
Nor will I be doing anything in CMD and pasteing āesptool.exe -vv -cd nodemcu -cb 115200 -cp COM%comport% -ca 0x00000 -cf Sonoff.ino.generic.binā to start the flashā¦
but instead go to here https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flasher ⦠and this is where I am a bit confused. I am guessing I download the zip file (green drop down menu and download the zipfile) then what do I do to start the flash? and get the screen shown in the link you posted?
Thanks
This is the program @mohitmathew means use NodeMcu instead of Espeasy so no copying and pasting needed for you now.
Unzip it and open it and on this tab select your port number
And this tab click on the cog on the top line to open a window and locate the firmware file you was going to use with Espeasy āSonoff.genericā i think itās called
The numbers next to the cog on the right should be 0X0000
Then set your baud rate to 11520 and flash size to 1mb in the other tab.
Iām just going of memory here so may be wrong slightly Iām at work on my phone lol
Then all you do is get the sonoff into flash mode and hit flash on the program.
Btw i never soldered my pins in just held them in place.
I see, and Thank you, this is starting to make more sense⦠gotta drill down into the windowās 64 folder down till I get to the āESP8266Flasherā application, double click that to get the screen shot you are showing. And Iāve downloaded the Sonoff.ino.generic.bin from https://www.youtube.com/redirect?redir_token=Hz19t1x2CgEwNhvQgEjLtUgdaTh8MTUxNjc4MjE5OUAxNTE2Njk1Nzk5&q=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Ferocm123%2FSmartThingsPublic%2Fraw%2Fmaster%2Fdevicetypes%2Ferocm123%2Fsonoff-wifi-switch.src%2FSonoff.ino.generic.bin&event=video_description&v=FxV_zWvxbSE
So once I get my sonoff, I should be ready to go then?
Sort of yeah.
Youāre probably best opening your documents folder on your laptop create a new folder called "sonoff"
So then place your firmware file in there and the NodeMcu program ,
But rembember you need to extract the Node MCU program from the zip file.
So basically in your new sonoff folder you just want 2 thingsā¦
The firmware
The NodeMcu program (No zip files)
Then open the NodeMcu and do as i said above ^^^
And when you click on cog locate the new sonoff folder you created and select the firmware file inside it.
Thanks,
Does it matter if I want to go ahead and add the device handler and smart app in the IDE before hand?
No you can add them now thatās fine
Thank you Steve for clearing the muddy water up. I feel a lot more confident going into this this now. I was worried after seeing so many posts issues⦠I think once I get it done, Iāll make a quick and easy job aid for noobs like myself. Iāve only had my smartthings for about a month now.
No probs let me know how you get on.
Problem with skiing a guide is they get outdated quite quickly when things change so thatās where some confusion comes in lol
To be honest i donāt really use my basic Sonoffs now i only used them for lamps but found in preferred IKEA bulbs
Will do!
Mine are going to solve a problem Iāve been wanting to fix for a while by getting all 6 of my outside flood lights smart. The previous owner or when the house was built, had them tied to low voltage relays, so I canāt make my switch smart, no 120v, so by putting these between my light fixtures and the relay system it should solve my problem, and I should still be able to use the light switches to turn them on and off.
Yeah it should do it.
Did you know these Sonoffs only get wired one way!
One side is the input one side the output i didnāt know at first lol
Yep, Iāve been doing a lot of research on these switches. Thereās a lot more ways to use than what most use them for.
