Noob Q: Switch and bulb on separate circuits

I’m very new to ST, couldn’t find a newbie section so asking here.

I think I have this figured out mostly. I have a ceiling light on one circuit, can make it always on.

I need to wire a switch nearby to control it, but it has to be on a separate circuit.

Assuming both will always have power, can I use a GE Z-Wave switch to control a Sylvania Z-Wave bulb on a different circuit?

Can the Z-Wave switch work without being wired to any load? So, just with line/neutral/ground connected and controlling the Sylvania bulb through ST?

Should I use a wireless battery-powered switch instead? Is there a particular recommended model?

Thanks!

Welcome! :sunglasses:

Yes to all of these (except that Sylvania bulbs are zigbee, not zwave, although it doesn’t make any difference in this case).

Details in the smart bulb switch FAQ (this is a clickable link)

A popular brand is the go control/linear accessory switch which is designed not to control a load and has its own Z wave radio. So the switch talks to the hub and the hub talks to the bulb. Shop around, including at Home Depot, as prices vary a lot:

As far as battery-operated Devices there are a lot of choices. The following list includes both wall mount and handheld and both battery operated and mains powered so read descriptions carefully:

A Third alternative is a battery operated smart switch cover which fits over the existing switch so you don’t have to rewire it. That’s discussed in detail in the switch FAQ. :sunglasses::level_slider::bulb:

Also, although there isn’t a new folk section of the forum , there are two places you may find helpful. The first is just the FAQ category:

But even more helpful is probably the “get started” quick browse list in the community – created wiki. It’s under project reports. Lots of interesting stuff there, both practical and inspirational. :tada:
