No zigbee LED controllers work with my Aeotec Hub

I have a smart things hub with the below specifications. I have a Candeo Led controller for zigbee. the controller is discovered, paired and connects fine to the hub and I can see it on the smart things app, but as soon as it’s connected, if I try to turn it on and off or change color via the app it does not work; the app reports a network error and after a few minutes the device is displayed as offline. the same thing happened with a gledopto 5-in-1 zigbee controller, which I returned thinking it was a faulty controller.

there are no obstructions in the way, the controller is very close to the hub (less than 3 feet). I have zigbee smart plugs that are much further away and they work perfectly fine.

  • the controller is not faulty and it powers up a led strip just fine.
  • I already try to reboot the hub and to disconnect it for 20 minutes while the zigbee controller is on.
  • I always tried assigning a different driver to the controller (this one: (EDGE Driver-Mc): Zigbee Light Multifunction Mc - #136 by Mariano_Colmenarejo
  • I tried resetting the controller
  • I tried changing the zigbee channel from 24 (the default) to 11.

Nothing I tried works. The behaviour is still the same. The controller is discovered and pairs fine but then it cannot be controlled and changing colours or intensity does not work.

Please any help is appreciated.

Update: So of course as soon as I post, I find the solution.

In my case, I installed the candeo driver: https://support.candeo.io/portal/en/kb/articles/czblc20-how-do-i-install-a-new-smartthings-driver

Then re-added the device, which selected the corrected driver.

This was not the actual solution though, even if it may have helped. The problem is that as soon as I switch operational mode (from RGBT-CCT to RGBW etc…), the controller no longer connects to the hub. The only way of making it work all the time is to just keep the default mode (RGBT-CCT) after pairing. This is the same for all 5-in-1 controllers.

Not sure why but changing mode just breaks something.

Because that’s a factory reset. Why do you think it should stay connected after a factory reset?

What? No, I did “short press the opt button to cycle through the modes”. Why would cycling through the mode be a factory reset?

The opt button causes the controller to stop working, not the reset one. That’s what is weird about this situation. It’s an odd and unexpected side effect.

We don’t know if it basically acts as a different device (with different clusters) after changing the mode.

And why would you change the mode after installing it anyway? It’s not likely that someone would change the type of the LED strip after adding it to a hub.

This device change the fingerprint model when you change de operating mode.

It has 5 different fingerptint model, see this post and thread.

When you change the operating mode you need reinstall device with the driver.

If you use my driver then you can perform a rapid reinstallation:

  • change to operating mode you need
  • put device in pairing mode
  • in app add new device with search nearby option
  • device will bee reassigned to the correct profile and clusters and attributes configured
