Very good question, and one that has often been discussed in the forums. See the following threads for many ideas. (Each thread title is a clickable link.)
So I have been trying to find a way to automate the lights in the bedrooms but cannot seem to find the logic that could account for the multitude of conditions that occur in the bedrooms. Motion sensor came the closest, but that too had its flaws. (e.g. I had to move around when reading a book so that lights would stay on). Was wondering what logic others use to automate their lights?!

Hi i wanted to buy the motion sensor for my house, for now just to turn on lights when someone is coming and off when there is no one on the rooom ( i will use my hue bulbs and z wave switches).
However im new in this, so what i need is when i enter to my room the lights keep on meanwhile im there and im watching the tv on the bed, or on the laptop, or whatever case, and if i leave the lights turn off after X amount of time.
And a way to “turn off” scene so it will not turn on the light when i move when im sleeping.
i find fibaro interesting, twice expensive for me than the smart things (because i live in mexico) however i can use a fibaro in my beedroom and smart things on the bathrooms or other places, but m not sure if Fibaro it’s easy, because i read i need change the device type fo…

I’m currently using ‘Bright When Dark And/Or Bright After Sunset’ by Arnaud and it’s working very well for me.
Now though, I’m wondering if I can tweak it a little bit to not trigger upon rolling over in bed at night.
When I walk into the room at night, it turns on a nightlight. However, it also turns it on if I roll over while lying in bed.
I’m just not sure if the solution here would be something different about the SmartApp, or something different with motion sensor placement in the room.
Perhaps I could put the motion sensor closer to the floor so that it only notices movement at the point when I’d actually be stepping out of bed onto the floor. I could also have multiple motion sensors in different locations and configure it to only pay attention to one or another during a specifi…

I’m hoping to get some ideas on what people are doing to trigger events once they get out of bed in the morning. I’m not currently on a schedule–it’d be easy if I were, obviously–and I usually wake up anywhere from 7:00 AM - 9:30 AM.
I’ve got a SmartThings motion sensor in my bedroom, which wouldn’t really be much help in deciding whether I’ve actually gotten up (vs. just rolled over in bed). I haven’t been able to find any sensors that can be placed in the bed (I’m thinking something along the lines of a Z-wave pressure sensor that could be placed under the mattress), and I haven’t been able to brainstorm a way of telling that I’m awake and ready to get going. There are several events I’d like to have happen once I wake up:
(1) turn off my white noise machine (I’ve got it connected to a…

There are many threads in the forums discussing how to handle the issue of lights turning off too early, but now that Rule Machine and SmartZone Manager exist, the answers given in the previous threads might not be the best solutions.
There are several general approaches that most people use, just depending on preference and local circumstances.
One) use multiple devices to cover different areas. The devices might be different types.. For example, a motion sensor might trigger lights to come on when a person enters the room, but then a multi sensor or weight sensor attached to the chair or couch might be much m…
