Sweet!
Devices can now notify Controllers of capability changes after commissioning, for example after a firmware update, without needing a reboot or re-commissioning. For users, new features become available without extra setup.
Endpoints, such as individual plugs on a power strip, now retain the same ID across Admins and recommissions. This avoids duplicate entries and confusion when devices are reconfigured or reconnected.
While all of this sounds encouraging for the smart home standard, these improvements rely on ecosystems and device manufacturers rolling out updates or building new hardware (there are still no Matter-enabled Wi-Fi routers).
One of Matterās biggest problems has been the slow adoption of new specs by some of the major players, which in turn deters manufacturers from investing in updates and new hardware.
To expand the information a bit on the āMotionAwareā technology of Signify:
I believe itās just the same they did with SpaceSense for WiZ lights but applied to Zigbee. If the performance is like WiZ it will be cool for demos and marketing but not so good in practice: when it works it feels like magic, when it doesnāt you just go for traditional motion sensors which are more reliable.
iām very curious about this:
Light bulbs with Matter: Direct connection?
Philips Hue has been compatible with the smart home standard since Matter was launched. However, this is only possible via the bridge. In April, several Hue light bulbs with a Matter code appeared at the US regulatory authority FCC. This would mean that a direct connection to a Matter border router without a Hue bridge would be possible. The problem: Zigbee and Bluetooth, the two wireless standards used by previous Hue light bulbs, are not yet part of the Matter standard.
I wonder if they are going Aqaraās route and enabling their bulbs to use Thread for Matter and Zigbee for Hue bridge?
A couple things that catch my eye about those new Cync dimmers:
-
Keypad - one of the few (only?) keypad + dimmer iāve seen. Others are usually a switch. $38 is a nice price too
-
Dimmer - the physical slider is VERY interesting. Does it move if the dim level is controlled via smart home? $26 is also a nice price for a Matter dimmer from a reputable company
-
Both can work with normal switches in multi-way circuits
I agree, the keypad is a nice form. Iāve been looking, but I canāt find any indication that itās UL listed, and it is mains powered, is it not? That would be an odd omission since the other Mains powered lighting controls in the Cync line were specifically UL listed so that they could be sold at Home Depot.
I also see that Home Depot is not yet carrying the keypad. But maybe itās just too new.
If anyone verifies that the keypad is UL or ETL listed, please let us know. Thanks!
They are ETL listed. I donāt see UL. Theyāre sending me a couple, so iāll let you know if I see otherwise.
ETL listed would be good enough. Thanks! ![]()
Not sure where else to put this, but this pull request to add a Hue device to the Matter switch driver strikes me as strange. Hue doesnāt have an individual devices that work directly with Matter. AFAIK they all work through a bridge. Maybe Iām reading too much into it?
Saw that the other day, itās either the new rumored Matter over Thread bulbs from Hue or that bridged Hue lights are also getting certified for some reason.
Zigbee Aqara devices like the Cube have Matter drivers for the case when they are bridged.
I only see a bespoke Zigbee driver for the Aqara cube. I donāt see it in any of the matter drivers..
Itās a subdriver of Matter Switch actually
ah, niceā¦.
Sounds great ā a strong commitment to Matter and a future full of mainstream Thread products at IKEA prices. For many, myself included, that means a reliable quality standard, often paired with attractive products in a clean Scandi design.
Unfortunately, after all the promises made at Matterās launch, IKEAās actual delivery has been among the most disappointing ā arguably the worst of any manufacturer.
