Matter over Thread with SmartThings

Howdy Everyone,

How well does ST and Matter over Thread work together?

I have a v3 Hub that I used to use way back in the day, but switched to HA for more customization.

However, Matter over Thread DOES NOT work with HA (it SAYS it does, and devices connect - but their constantly offline and unavailable. Anyone that says that they have it setup and don’t have issues with it is full of shit), so I’m curious at what others here have experienced in their daily lives using this headache inducing protocol before I dump HA and come back to ST.

I have a half a dozen Matter over Thread in-wall and plug-in outlets. They added easily and generally work well. As with most mesh technologies, proximity to the hub and number of devices determine the strength of the mesh.

Thank you for that!

Did you combine your thread networks to other ones (if you have them, like Google Home or AppleTVs) or just using the one thread for the ST?

In HA, they recommend a bunch of thread routers and mains power plugs (like the Eve Energy) to strengthen the network.

I’ve got two Google Homes and 5 main power Eve Energy added to the HA thread network (which does not help to strengthen the network).

I have Thread networks on my ST Station, Samsung Fridge Hub, Eero Wi-Fi, and Echo Show 8. Haven’t found a way to unify any of them.

HA just released a new antenna:

I unified my thread networks into one with Apple TV being the primary. It was rough going for the first two weeks but it has since become stable again.

I did see that, I’m currently using HA Yellow and thread is on the internal chip. I can’t really find anything that explains if getting the ZBT-2 will improve Matter Thread or not. I know there is a performance boost over the ZBT-1, but not over the chip that is built into the HA Yellow.

I don’t know if I’m willing to spend another $50 on the already hundreds I’ve poured into this and find it doesn’t do any good.

A lot of people talking about improvements with Zigbee though.

I had 16 matter over thread devices on my hub3 and recently moved to hub4.
I’ve had no issue on either.
When I only had a few devices one bulb tended to occasionally drop offline. That stopped when I added more devices to the mesh.
15 out of 16 devices are mains powered (outlets or bulbs) so they all contribute to the mesh.
I am only using the thread network from the hub.

I currently have 25 Matter-over-Thread devices and recently replaced all my Z-Wave ones. The setup has been rock solid so far, and overall performance feels a bit snappier compared to before.

My current lineup includes: LWR0, Aqara P300,Aqara P2,Zemismart roller motor,Ubolt lock,Nanoleaf bulb,Eve contact sensor,Inovelli dimmer,Smartsetup switch (surprisingly reliable and good quality for a modest price),Eve Outlet,Arre Smart Button,Heiman smoke detector

Watching.

I don’t yet have any Thread devices but I’m starting to have physical device failures on some older Z-wave devices. I’m interested in experiences and recommendations, especially Thread switches and dimmers.

Inovelli White Series has Thread Switches/Dimmers and Fan Controllers

Eve has Thread Switches/Outlets, Contact/Motion Sensors and Plugs

And as announced on several other threads (sorry) IKEA has announced 20 Matter-over-Thread devices for 2026 which will help to make this protocol really mainstream.

Kinda getting sticker shock from the Inovellis! Hoping I don’t lose any more devices before the Ikea devices are available.

Can only comment on the ST hubs. But the unify option works great for a new hub with no attached devices. I managed to join quite a few thread routers together.

First 3 of the new matter over thread devices have arrived at IKEA in Atlanta

With all the new Aqara matter devices, can they work with smartthings hub only?

Just scanned thru the Aqara Switch H2 as an example. Website says it’s dual protocol, Zigbee or Thread. It lists compatibility with SmartThings and says no Aqara hub is required in Thread mode.

So I’d say their Thread devices would be good to use with SmartThings

True…

As for pretty much every Matter over Thread device.

Thanks guys

Aqara’s dual protocol matter over thread devices usually work well* with smartthings out of the box.

*Aqara does restrict a lot of their device config settings to their ecosystem using Zigbee mode
