Please don’t spend $95 for the GoControl opener. I’ve seen them at Amazon for $70 and Lowe’s for as low as $60. Get a $15 off $50 coupon and you can get it for around $45.
Agree. I’v been monitoring the linear/go control opener on amazon and Lowe’s for the past month and haven’t seen any deals; hence why I’m looking at option 2
Nortek is one of the largest manufacturers of zwave devices in the US. They sell the devices under a number of different brand names, including Linear and GoControl. They’ll have the same model number, they just come in a different box.
The GD00Z is UL-listed as a garage door controller. If you use the relay, you’re essentially just hotwiring your garage door opener.
As far as costs, the GD00Z is widely available, including at Lowe’s (under the iris brand), at Home Depot, at Walmart, at Amazon, etc. shop around and you should be able to find it considerably lower than $90.
The regular Lowes price is 79.99, so if you use a 10% off coupon it will be about $73.
The box that the device comes in. And the label stuck on the front.
Seriously, they’re just relabeled for sale through different channels. It’s the same device.
-1 Iris, for sale at Lowes
-2 Linear, intended for sale to installers
-3 Nexia, for sale by Nexia distributors
-4 GoControl, for sale to DIY customers through Best Buy, Amazon, Sears, etc
-5 OEM version, Linear label
I just installed the GD00Z today. Works great. My only complaint is there is a “safety feature”, so when you select Open or Close, the box beeps for 5 seconds before actually moving. Fine if you are inside, but sitting in your car, you sit there wondering if it worked or not.
Further, there is a “lock out” that prevents issuing two command close together. So, if you open the garage door from your phone, walk out, and try to close it, it won’t work. You have to stand in the cold and wait a bit, and then you can close the door. I wish there was a way to turn this “feature” off!
I got my GoControl/Linear/whatever you want to call it through Amazon’s ware house deals for about $55, I believe. My experience with Amazon Warehouse and HA stuff is that people either don’t have neutrals, couldn’t fit in a switch or didn’t know how to install it, so things are returned because of user error and not device malfunctioning.
With that out of the way, I would recommend any garage door installer instead of a relay. Garage door controllers, as stated by JD as usual, are UL listed, which means they pass required security standards. They beep before actually opening or closing, as to give a person a heads up. They won’t activate after a power outage. And as previously stated, it prevents two close commands to work.
The only upside I can see to a relay instead of a garage door controller is you bypass Alexa’s blocking features of doors and locks.
The way I see it, I wouldn’t hotwire my front door lock by placing a motor with a relay just to save on the $100-200 automated locks. Even if I could make it invisible and bypass the obvious aesthetic problems this would present. Just my two cents.
