I have a small fan heater which when you turn it on it goes to standby. You then have to press on switch once more to start the heater. I have managed to set a routine in Alexa to turn heater on but it only does the first step which means I then have to manually press the on switch again to start the heater. Anybody know how to get around this

Are you currently using smartthings? If so, there are several different ways of accomplishing what you describe.
