Just as the title says and I did try to search the forum to no avail. But, I don’t remember being able to rename the Thread Networks on our hubs to something we wanted before. I always remember them being set via the hub itself and we were stuck with it unless we created a hub group (even then it took on last used networks name) or unified it with another. Is this something that is new or have I just oblivious to this feature?
I also noticed it. It was added with the latest app update.
Pressing the cog wheel on the Thread Network title has allowed renaming for some time now (at least on iOS beta).
What seems to have changed is the behavior when trying to unify Thread networks. After selecting “Join this hub with another Thread network” and choosing a network, the system now responds:
“To join the hub to the selected Thread network, open the app and obtain the Thread Administration One-Time Passcode.”
A month ago I was able to unify networks without this step, but now it’s no longer possible, as none of the other apps I use (Apple, Eero, Smart Life) provide this passcode feature.
Which hub were you trying to join to? To my understanding credential storage is still being used as joining my HomePod thread network couldn’t be done from my Galaxy, but was done automatically via iPhone.
That’s a function of the Thread 1.4 spec for how to unify Thread networks in a standardized manner.
I would have thought that also, as originally I had joined my V3 to the Homepod network and I’m using an iPhone. Was my fault, playing around with Hub groups I lost the network sharing and now on trying again…
I find this, which I must admit is logical. The problem is that other manufacturers don’t seem to be taking up this iniciative, and even in the case of Apple are still on Thread 1.3
I’ve changed my Thread network name twice and both times it has reverted to the hub generated name.
Mine did that about three or four times too before it stopped.
I tried renaming mine and it stuck first time. But, I have had SmartThings do this with other things like renaming actual devices, moving devices around (both to different rooms and rearranging their layout within the room), and even rearranging the Home Insight Dashboard. All these items I have had problems with in the past where I change them and the next time I reopen the app they have reverted back to what they were. I think it’s an issue that even though you change it, it doesn’t save to your personal SmartThings cloud and reverts back to what it was. Eventually it will save correctly, but it can be a pain to have to deal with until then. The worst for me is the Home Insight Dashboard, as when a new insight pops up say a device with a low battery or device that has gone offline that wasn’t there before it rearranges the whole dashboard. Then when they go away it not only rearranges the dashboard again half the time it doesn’t go back to the way I had it arranged and I must manually rearrange it back to my liking.
EDIT: Well I spoke too soon. My TV rebooted by me shutting it off and turning it on too fast. Once I did that it rebooted it’s hub and the name reverted back to what it was.
I noticed the rename option only after a recent app update, so I’m pretty sure it’s a newer tweak rather than something you missed. Renaming didn’t break anything in my setup, and it behaves a lot like batch-renaming files on my computer. I’ve been using https://renamer.io for that kind of thing, so the flow felt familiar. The hub seems fine with whatever custom name you give the Thread network.
