Hampton Bay Zigbee Fan controller

My master has a single gang with separate light/fan controls for speed/brightness. Can I use this and still keep the wall fan speed/dimmer controls functional?

Nope. The best you can do is get a wall mounted remote like discussed in the thread but it’s not a perfect match to the controller.

Alternatively you could expand to a double gang old work and use separate light and fan Zwave switches.

Kind of. I have the same setup. I use a GE light dimmer at the wall that’s directly connected to the light, and the wire that was controlling fan now powers the receiver unswitched. The light wire coming out of the receiver is capped off.

I then have double tap at the dimmer to trigger the fan to turn on/off at the last level. You could use another dimmer that supports triple tap, etc. if you want additional speed controls, or just use the remote to change speeds (which I never seem to do).

Just wanted to say, bought another one of these off the Home Depot website yesterday. They’re in stock!

This is what I figured, the remote is an idea but I try to avoid batteries if possible. Mains power is just less hassle.

Not a bad idea I will keep this in mind also. Seems like there is no perfect solution when it comes to fan light combos. Mainly I wanted the ability to control the fan automatically by temp, that was my initial reason for looking into fan control, although having motion activated lights in the master would also be nice.

I have these remotes, and while they’re still fairly new, they replaced earlier Hampton Bay wall switches that have worked for almost a decade. I rarely ever had to change the batteries. I did have to return one because it was burning through batteries, but the rest work perfectly.

If I could get around 5 years out of the batteries it wouldn’t be too bad. Sounds like they are pretty reliable also, which is good.

Well, the last ones used 9-volt batteries. These use a 23A battery (12 V) battery. I’ll let you know how they do in a few years.

had my remotes for almost a year and no battery replacements yet

So I just ordered 3 of these devices and will be installing them soon. There appear to be multiple DTHs that can be used. Since Im not installing them in the specified fan at this link:

From this post: [BETA v0515] Hampton Bay Zigbee Ceiling Fan/Light Controller

Which device type do I use, for typical 3 speed pull chain fans, with one wall switch?

Is this the one I should use? Home Decorators Ceiling Fan/Light Controller MR101Z - First Impressions

Thanks in advance!

I think there’s only one DTH out there, although there are many different threads about essentially the same product (purchased from Home Depot as a controller, integrated into the Gardinier 52" fan, or as spare parts directly from KOF). Use the handler linked in the first post in this thread:

Your fans have integrated 3-speed control, but you’re just going to set the pull chain to the highest speed and the controller will provide 4-speed control. You won’t use the wall switch anymore - the simple options are to remove it (and tie together the line/load so the fan is always on), install a safety cover over it, or add a Sylvania battery pushbutton that covers the switch, and use that for control.

Ok. I bought the $49 kit and will just use the 3 DTHs in that thread.

Thanks for the clarification!

Agreed, I have only seen one device handler for this device. Or more specifically one parent device handler and a few children; they all need to be installed together for it to work as intended with ST.

So, the wall switches have been replaced with the remote? The wall switch would’ve been ideal for me since I have an existing switch sitting in a 3 gang setup that controls the lights and cieling fan. Is there any place where I can still purchase the zigbee wall switch?

And for those who are using the remote in lieu of the existing wall switch that controls light/fan, did you guys do anything to the existing switch or just left it there as is? A posts above indicates the existing will be useless once this is installed.

i replaced the physical switch/dimmer with a Hampton Bay wall Remote. Its only 3 speeds (v/s 4 on the unit) but compatible with the receiver

Just throw the receiver you get with the wall unit away or use for a diy project…

This is some common confusion. In this solution, all the “smart” stuff is in the controller in the ceiling. The remote is not a smart remote and is just a normal 400 MHz RF remote that you have used everywhere else.

There is no Z-wave or ZigBee wall switch – trust me I wish there were! If you want to go that route it requires two devices – one for the light and one for the fan and depending on the fan, the speed control may or may not work that well. Leviton has both available.

As for the switch, you should just hard wire the fan as on/hot all the time and use the controller in the ceiling as the switch – so yes the switch would be useless or more like a problem since it would kill power to the controller. Then you can put a blank over the old switch and mount the remote to it (yet another issue in that the Hampton Bay remote does not come with a wall holster!).

BTW, depending on what you’re needs are and if you have RF remotes for your fans already, check out BOND. I’m really liking it and it’s one purchase for all fans. It doesn’t have state control (unless that is built into the fan) and the ST integration is still in the works but it might get you almost to the same place. The lack of state control means that if you hit the remote button, the state is not tracked so something like ST wouldn’t know if the fan is on or off but if your remote has dedicated buttons (such as light off, fan speed 1, fan off, etc.) then once the ST integration gets off the ground you can have it send the commands to put it into a known state. A few select fans have state-based remotes and that makes things even easier.

If you have room to put in 2 switches and the wiring already in place, then there’s no reason for this controller.

If you have the wiring in place for separate loads to the light and fan but only the room for 1 switch, you can put a blank where the current dual rocker is (and perhaps velcro tape the remote there), install the Hampton Bay in wall remote (keep in mind this DOES NOT fit in a standard Decora plate opening and you will need to cut out your existing 3gang plate to make it fit, or install some other smart control there that you can use to trigger functions on the controller.

I personally had the separate loads, but no room to add another switch. I put a GE dimmer in that spot that directly controls the light kit in my fan, and use the controller only for the fan portion. I then set up double tap buttons on my dimmer to turn the fan on and off, and use the SmartLighting app to trigger my dimmer ON/OFF if someone ever turns the light ON/OFF from the remote.

This was apparently true at first, but at some point they must have redesigned it.

I recently bought two, they both fit in standard decora cutouts for multigang wallplates.

Interesting. I bought a few of these 4 months ago and returned them both partially because of this issue. Also, I hated that the All ON/OFF was on top and not just a Light ON/OFF

It was probably just in the last couple months.

I agree, I’m not a huge fan of the design. But not having a wall control isn’t an option in my house, and this is still preferable to a blank decora insert and velcroing the remote control onto that, or something like that.
