I have had a Go Control installed for the past five years. It has worked very well until recently. Now it has started opening the garage door at random times. I have no idea why. I have not changed any settings for the controller. We have two phones that act as presence sensors to open/close the doors when we arrive/depart. Both of those are working. Just in case I replaced the battery in the tilt sensor. That did not change anything.
Pretty baffled on this issue. It poses a security issue if the door automatically opens at random times.
Check if your phones are shown as coming and going at other times. Easiest way to do that might be to create a new set of automations that notifies you when each phone arrives and departs. If so, you may want to consider using an alternate means of presence detection.
The front door lock runs a routine to open or lock tied to the phones presence sensor. The door never to my knowledge unlocked when the garage door opened by itself randomly. Having said that the garage door has not randomly opened since I disabled them as presence sensors.
Yeahā¦ this is a thing. There are a few older posts about it. In my case the doors would sometimes open all the way or sometimes only part way. SmartThings support helped look into it but never was able to figure it out. It was a few months after it started when 1 of them went off-line and I was never able to restore it. Thatās when I went with the Zooz Zen17 relay. It has worked well for me.
Iām pretty sure I have it fixed and figured out. I rebooted the hub and I turned off the presence sensor on both cell phones. The Garage door quit opening on itās own but I also noticed the door state was āsluggishā on updating its status. It would get stuck on opening or closing and would not change status for 15 minutes or more.
The only devise that I had not done a reboot on was the garage door controller itself. It plugs into the ceiling and is pretty high. So I found the circuit breaker and turned it off and counted to 20 seconds before turning it back on. My Action Tiles for the garage controller went to āunknownā for about 10 minutes. When it finally reconnected it started working just fine.
As an aside, automated closing of a garage door is a huge safety concern. Garage doors can damage property, injure or kill people or children.
Iām always surprised by the number of people that automate the closing of their garage door. Is it that hard to press a button when youāre in view of the door?
Keep in mind, mine was not triggered by presence. Only by pressing the button. So in my case it had nothing to do with a phone or presence. I also had to power down the door controller to reset and it would reconnect. Then a few days later the door would open on its own. āLather, rinse, repeatā until the controller went off-line and could not be brought back. I see a new controller in your future!
Maybe. Iām prepared for that as well. Konnected has a garage door controller out that uses a laser to determine the door position. If the current one messes up again Iāll get the knew one.
