Can you just clarify for me.
One dot plus on after turning bulb on.
Did the bulb flash at all.
Just wondering as it doesn’t work for me.
Thanks
@R2D2 I am using ‘Zigbee Hue White - HC’ from post 15 on this thread by @ktsi.
@bobbles I don’t know if order is important. I know holding them both down for a number of seconds was required. Try them together, and then each before the other… reporting back may be helpful for others.
Ta
I switched on bulb, held on and 1 dot, keep holding down, flashes a few times. The remote shouldn’t now control the bulb,
Now switch off and on bulb. ST app, connect now and found ZigBee bulb
Thanks.
The reason I’m asking if the bulb flashes 3 times is when I reset my RGBW hue bulb that’s what happened. I get nothing with the hue white.
without adding the above it switches off anyway so do I need a handler? it added as a Zigbee hue lux bulb and allows me to control on and off and dimming anyway?
not sure why or how though just happy to get working!
Sorry to keep on about this but did the bulb flash when you reset it?
My hue RGBW did but this one does nothing.
Yes my bulb which is labelled hue white, flashed when I pressed on and single dot.
I then switched off and on, ST found it straight away
Thanks @R2D2.
Mine just will not reset.
It resets a hue RGBW ok.
Perhaps it’s faulty.
It was paired to my hub ok and I deleted by mistake.
Would you mind showing me a screenshot of the device in the ide.
I can then try and define it manually going through the not used zigbee id’so to see if I can get it to work.
Edit. No that won’t work.
Any help I can give I’ll try.
Mine at first trying to reset I mistakenly used the on and 2 dot, and I still got the bulb to flash. The remote still worked on the bulb, finding out now that shouldn’t do it, and I was using the wrong dot, should be the 1 dot.
All I can say is keep it pressed for a long time and try, see if it flashes.
Successfully reset a Philips Hue White Ambience Bulb with Philips Hue Dimmer…
All, a bit late to the party as a relative newcomer and I should have read this thread BEFORE tinkering! Here’s my tale of woe and first contribution (resetting Hue Bulb to factory using Philips Hue Dimmer).
I directly added my Philips Hue bulb to ST (no Hue Bridge) and it worked great - I could get Echo to control the bulb - all good.
I then wondered if I could also pair the Hue Dimmer switch AS WELL. Having not read the thread and fully understanding the implications the switch and bulb formed their own ZLL network and I tried to reset the bulb - got one of the round ones on order to do a reset (due today).
Just had a brainwave and thought I’d give it a shot - I reset the Hue Dimmer remote using the pinhole at the back (hold for 10-15 seconds until the green LED blinks then release). Once it is in was in the reset state (i.e. no longer part of ZLL network) I held it near the offending bulb pressing on and off at the same time until the bulb blinks - RESET and re-added to ST!
Now to re-add the Hue Dimmer switch as Zigbee control using info on another thread.
Hope it helps someone.
Oh, forgot to mention - I’m hoping this is the same method to steal a bulb back from the Hue Bridge but as I don’t have one someone with a bridge and Philips Hue Dimmer might be able to confirm.
FACTORY RESET PHILLIPS HUE BULB - - - Since I had such a hard time figuring all this out I’m going to give FULL DETAILS on how to do this. Below is a list of what works and what doesn’t work.
First, the Lutron Connected Bulb Remote, from Home Depot, for $22 + tax. In-store availability is excellent. From top to bottom press and hold (within very close proximity) the second and bottom buttons simultaneous. The bulb will flash then dim. Now the bulb is reset. Place bulb close to ST hub and select Add a Thing only. Add Device Manually will not allow you to add a Phillips hue bulb without adding a Hue Bridge first. Once added it will show the device type as “unknown”. Login to your IDE page. (http://graph.api.smartthings.com) and edit new device. Change “Type” to either ZLL RGBW Bulb or Zigbee RGBW Bulb. Both work well. You may also poke around this “Community” and find some EXCELLENT device-Type Handlers (DTH’s) that individuals have written … if you know how to create your own DTH’s. I specialize in voice automation only, (Alexa & Goggle Home) so these generic DTH’s more than suffice for me. - - (NOTE: The Lutron Caseta Pico remote DOES NOT work!)
Second, the Light Link remote by Phillips who’s proper name is “LivingColors Ambience”, for $12 to $14 from China, and is easy to find on eBay. This is the most interesting remote. It is gorgeous! It both does AND does NOT work. It WILL factory reset your bulb but unfortunately it also automatically pairs your bulb to the remote. (Press “On” button for 5+ seconds.) You can then press “Off” for 5+ seconds to unpair it… at which time it needs to be factory reset again. So there-in lies your catch 22! I have not been successful at adding it to the system in tandem with the ST hub. If you figure out how to do that, please share, as I would love to use this remote as a coffee table remote. It works great but unfortunately it is useless in this application. Perhaps I will find some other use for it. I love it!
Lastly, We have the Phillips Remote. I don’t know it’s exact name and I only found a single seller on eBay and only in the UK. Price is ~$14 USD. Approx 1 week delivery time. I DID NOT test this one but saw it work on YouTube and am convinced that it works. Press “On” and “Scene One” simultaneously until bulb flashes. Then follow the same directions as written above. Supposedly it will reset your Hue Bridge too.
I also saw something about using the Hue Bridge & App to reset the Hue bulb… but you are on your own there. I am principally opposed to buying every manufactures’ bridge. Hue, Iris, Lutron, Broadlink, Harmony, Wink, HomeKit, StaplesConnect etc… I’d have more bridges than devices and many hundreds of dollars invested. I oppose proprietary type manufacturers which is why I use ST, Harmony and Android only. I’m sure the rest are ALL very fine devices… just not for me.
This has turned into a full blown article … I hope it has been helpful… go rest your eyes now.
Just a reminder that this thread is for people in the UK.
This method will work for some people, but not for everyone, which is why there’s an issue in the first place.
The hue devices, both the bridge and the dimmer switch, expect all Hue bulbs to be on a ZLL channel. So they will only reset devices that are on one of those channels.
The ZLL channels are a subset of the ZHA channels. The smartthings hub is a ZHA device. It can use any of the ZHA channels so, for example, it might use channel 14, which is not a ZLL channel. Or it might use channel 15, which is a ZLL channel.
You can see which zigbee channel your own hub uses by looking in the IDE. The only way to get it to use a different zigbee channel is to completely reset your hub, and you can’t specify which channel it should use, it’s just random. You might even get the same channel again. And after doing this kind of reset you have to completely rebuild your network and add all the devices back again.
When a zigbee bulb is connected directly to the Smartthings hub, it gets set to the zigbee channel that the hub uses – – and it stays on that channel until after it is forced to reset.
So, if you got lucky, your SmartThings hub was on zigbee channel 15 or 20 or another ZLL channel. So the hue bulb attached to the SmartThings hub is still on a ZLL channel. Those are the ones that can be factory reset by a Hue dimmer switch.
But if you were unlucky and your smartthings hub was on zigbee channel 14 or 24 or another non-ZLL channel, then that’s the channel you put your Hue bulb on, and the hue dimmer can’t reset it.
The Lutron “connected bulb remote” (available in the US), the Dresden zigbee module ( made in Germany and available for shipment to either the US or the UK) and some of the old Phillips remotes like the ones pictured in the thread above ( sometimes available on eBay in the U.K.) will try all the zigbee channels when they are forcing a bulb to reset. Not just the ZLL ones. So that’s why those devices will work on some of the bulbs that the hue dimmer switch cannot reset.
It’s not about the bulb. It’s about the zigbee channel that your hub is set to. Which is why different people get different results.
@JDRoberts - - Excellent information, thank you!!!
@JDRoberts, thanks for the explanation. I think I might have got lucky on that occasion - got one of the round remotes just in case - I’m sure I’m bound to get stuck on an incompatible channel at some point!
I’m looking to get my white Hues connected directly to the ST hub but can’t get this device handler created as I get the following error:
“Org.codehaus.groovy.control.MultipleCompilationErrorsException: startup failed: script1486591209432908826624.groovy: 30: unexpected token: } @ line 30, column 1. } ^ 1 error”
Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?
Don’t worry - sorted!
I wish I had read this thread before buying a Hue bulb off eBay. It’s a standard Hue White bulb.
Whilst I have been able to connect some other of these standard bulbs (which I bought new off Amazon) with no issues, the one I bought from eBay (second-hand) does not want to connect to my ST hub. I assume because it has previously been paired with something else.
So having scanned through this thread now, I’m still not 100% clear of my options.
I do not own a Hue Hub. I don’t want one really - but just for clarity - if I had one, would I be able to reset this Hue bulb so that I could then connect it directly to ST?
Alternatively, I’m wondering if I can buy the official Hue dimmer remote and try to use that.
I know @JDRoberts asked if anybody had used the official dimmer for this purpose…but I haven’t seen a response. This is my preferred option as I can buy the remote, free my Hue bulb, and then return the remote
It’s the same basic problem: the hue bridge (note that for technical reasons it’s a “bridge,” not a “hub,” hence the name) or the Hue dimmer can only reset the bulb if it’s on a ZLL channel. If it happens to be on a ZHA channel which is not also a ZLL channel, those devices can’t reset it.
That said, as long as this bulb had previously only been paired to a Hue dimmer switch or a hue bridge, it will be on a ZLL channel. It would’ve had to be directly paired to a home automation hub like SmartThings to end up on a ZHA-only channel instead. And most people don’t use those bulbs that way.
So I would think the odds are pretty high that an official Hue dimmer switch would be able to reset A secondhand bulb bought on eBay. You could try it and see. Remember that the Hue tap switch can’t do this reset, it has to be the dimmer.

Can I factory reset a Hue light with the Hue dimmer switch?
.

Yes you can, press and hold the ON and OFF button simultaneously until the LED light on the dimmer switch turns green (Note: the lamp is blinking during this process. Hue Beyond and Hue Phoenix are excluded).
Remember, though, this method will only work if the Hue bulb is on one of the ZLL channels. If it’s not, you have to use a different device.
