Ecobee 3 $199 at HD on Black Friday

I already have 2 Eco3s each with 1 remote. . Just watching for a deal on the extra sensors

I have 2 Ecobee3s and 6 remote sensors. It helped me tremendously with averaging the temperatures in the house, electric bill, and monitoring energy consumption. The integration with Siri, ST and Echo was painless. The app is awesome and the graph and charts are very useful in the beginning (Hardly look at them now).

However, if I were to do it over again, I would consider getting 2 standard z-wave therms and 6 standard z-wave motion and temperature sensors combos. I would then use one of the smartapps that does the same thing. Much cheaper and get more bang for the buck with instant updates rather than waiting sometimes 30 minutes before status changes.

Now that I think about it…Naw…Scratch that. The Ecobee3 is awesome!

Where do have your sensors installed? on a wall, a stand? That’s what I am having some trouble with. How to position them

If you’re a SCE and SoCal Gas customer in Southern California, there’s a $125 rebate with purchase of the Ecobee 3. You do have to sign up for their Energy saving program. Check your utility companies, there are probably rebates waiting for you.

I have them installed on walls out of direct sun light, 5’6" up and in clear view of the rooms I want to gauge temperature and motion.

I have a Den that is open to the Kitchen. 1 sensor on a wall more towards the Den looking into the Den.

I have 1 in a rather large Dayroom where it is all windows. This was my problem child room and the one that was totally throwing off the house temperature and keeping the system running 24/7 during the hotter weather. It has 2 double french doors that now stay mostly closed and the registers are closed until we occupy that space. (It gets hot in there! But we are hardly ever in that room.)

Another is in the Study. This room has 3 large windows in a Bay Build Out. Talking about sucking energy!!! Window Treatment and Caulk saved the day in there!

The other 3 are in BRs.

I have checked all sensors with a regular hand held laser therm and a sit on table therm/humidity thingy. They are all accurate within a degree or 2.

Only real complaint I have with Ecobee3s is the almost daily notification that 1 of them has lost connection with remote, then the reconnected 15-20 minutes later. Yet no notification if the actual Ecobee is offline.
The “old” Honeywell WiFi did do that, which worked great for me, since 99.99% of the time thermostat offline equates to somebody neglected to check the water level in a boiler and it got low enough to shut down.
I brought this up to Ecobee and they claimed to have forwarded up the ladder . I don’t care if the sensor in the bedroom lost connection. I do care if my heat is off.

Remember to check with your utility companies for rebates.
I use Consumers Energy and received $100 for purchasing the Ecobee 3 ($50 for gas and $50 for electric).
Sweet deal for a total of about $100 after rebate.
The tstat has been great with no issues after about 6 months. Will see how it works in the winter.
