Well NFC for door locks in case you get home and your phones dead or something then you could just tap the NFC tag on your keys to unlock the door. just an extra convenience just like all of these home automation gadgets. plus bluetooth can reach as far as 30’ away so how will the hub know which room I’m in and if I even wanted to activate that scene at that time. with NFC tags you don’t even have to navigate to any apps in your phone. you just tap the phone on the tag and it does the rest. will even turn the bluetooth on your phone on for you if you don’t like keeping that on on your phone for battery saving purposes.
Ok, was thinking of the NFC in the phone or device. So, was thinking that it did not make sense. However, this makes more sense. Although the NFC tags are easy to duplicate, which would pose a problem for security
aahhh so maybe just use those in the house.
Good Idea, where do you live? (WINK)
How about this RFID keypad from Zipato. http://www.amazon.com/Zipato-Mini-Keypad-Z-Wave-WT-RFID-US/dp/B00IA89R8K/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_i
Would make a great security system front end.
OK i saw this and had to reply, easy way to have a smartthings doorbell, buy the Everspring Z-Wave Door/Window Sensor, i bought it from amazon for 30 bucks. it has the option to use the magnetic door sensor or you can plug in 2 wire to any contact switch, ie doorbell. I have 3 of these for various uses, one as a doorbell for my back door, one as a silent alarm and one unlocks my back door from my office. it works awesome.
Nice to know, thanks for that tidbit of information
It would be great if you could post this as a quick tutorial for the community. I want to do this
I’m assuming it’s something like this:
but instead using a momentary pushbutton switch instead of additional contact sensors.
I took a bunch of pictures, but im too new to upload them but yes, just like the pictures above but you wire the two ends to the contacts of a doorbell.
Upped your level. Welcome!
Just going to post some random things I have that would make excellent additions
All of these have HTTP control
The Logitech Harmony Integration could likely take care of your TV and Receiver integrations today. I know we have looked at RainMachine but nothing is imminent.
@Ben I was under the impression that the Harmony integration was one way, basically allowing the Harmony remote and app to control SmartThings devices, but didn’t allow SmartThings to control the Harmony hub. Am I incorrect? I’d be overjoyed to be wrong on this one
You can do both. There is room for more, for sure. Some called out examples:
• Turn on Cable TV When I Return Home
• Turn off the Stereo When I Leave
• Turn on My PlayStation or Xbox When I Change to Game Mode
• …and much more
These on/off Harmony actions can be initiated with the following SmartThings triggers:
photosean• mode change
• contact sensor opens/closes
• acceleration detected
• motion starts/stops
• switch turned on/off
• person, pet, or car arrives/departs
• button press
• scheduled time
You can read more about it here:
This is great. I have a reason to put wave switches in our family room now…MOVIE TIME!
Now I just need Logitech to release that firmware update! I’m not buying another remote just for this. WAF would be low for that!
Yeah and it sounded like that may be a few months. Maybe that is their way of trying to get you to buy new hardware. The strange thing is, they seem to say that all the functions of the remote will be available through their free mobile app. So many you could use that in the meantime.
+1 for more thermostats including Honeywell’s line of internet enabled themos.
I’d put in a vote for:
Lennox iComfort thermostat
Chamberlain MyQ (I know there is community support for this one but built-in support would be great!)
Lockitron integration would be a great addition - I’m also confident this would take very little effort from our SmartThings gurus. They have a fully open API and would permit us to send temporary virtual “keys” to houseguests without granting them full-blown SmartThings access on their devices.
