Cannot activate "Smart Home Hub" feature on SmartThings Wifi (ET-WV520) - Network/Server Error

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble activating the “Smart Home Hub” (Zigbee/Z-Wave) functionality on one of my SmartThings Wifi units (the mesh router model).

The Situation:

I have two of these units. I moved one to a different house with a different ISP. The Wi-Fi router part works perfectly, but I cannot turn on the “Smart Home Hub” toggle in the app.

The Error:

Every time I try to enable the smart hub feature, I get a toast message saying: “A network or server error occurred. Try again later.”

What I’ve already tried:

Hard Reset: Performed a 30-second reset until the LED flashed red/green.

Location Management: Deleted the hub from my old “Location” and created a brand new “Location” in the app for the new house.

Web Portal: Used the SmartThings Advanced Web App to delete any ghost instances of the hub.

Connection Tests: Tried activating the toggle while my phone was on 4G/LTE instead of the local Wi-Fi to bypass potential DNS/Firewall issues.

App Cleanup: Cleared cache and even reinstalled the SmartThings app.

Current Status:

The LED is solid Green.

The device works as a Wi-Fi router.

My ISP router is locked (I can’t change DNS or set Bridge mode), but I suspect this might be a cloud registration/token issue since the hardware was previously registered to another setup.

Is there any way to force a cloud re-registration or check if the Zigbee radio certificate is corrupted?

Any help would be appreciated!

From previous discussions, it appears that ST no longer supports the hub function for the WV525 or WV520.

Thank you so much for the clarification

It is disappointing to confirm that the hub functionality for the WV520/WV525 is no longer supported, especially since the hardware itself is still perfectly capable. I had suspected a cloud-side restriction after exhausting all reset methods and testing across different accounts and ISPs.

I’ll continue to use it strictly as a Wi-Fi mesh router, as that part still works flawlessly, and I’ll look into a dedicated Station or V3 Hub for my Zigbee/Z-Wave devices.

Thanks again for saving me from more hours of useless troubleshooting!

the Station does not have a z-wave radio. plus they are no longer being manufactured.

I’ve got a couple of the WV520 hubs in use. They still work fine granted they’ve been configured and running for a long time - haven’t tried disabling and reprovisioning one.

Couple things that might be worth trying - disable the wifi and try configuring it wired. Try the opposite and disconnect the wire and configure it via wifi.

If not that, consider that the phone runs an app that talks to the cloud that talks to the hub. Ensure that path is as simple as possible.

The app also caches information about hubs and at one point in the distant past I needed to use a second phone to commission a new router because there was something cached on the first phone that was left over from a previous failure to commission it.
