August Locks

I’m right along with you in wanting August and SmartThings to work together, finally receiving my August “pre-order” from last November today…only 2 months after they released it in the Apple Store!

We DID have an integration of sorts at last year’s CES but it did involve “cloud services” and an iPhone with the August app foregrounded. The August lock integration will be much better once we have Bluetooth on the hub. Our two companies are very friendly and keep in close contact.

Hi guys,

Thought this might be of interest but August now sells the August Connect which basically seems to be a 49$ bluetooth to wi-fi bridge. The website is very scarce with details on the product itself and iOS seems to be required for initial configuration but if I am to believe what I read, it should enable API access to the lock…

Here’s one of the articles I found http://www.programmableweb.com/news/august-connect-web-enables-its-smart-lock-api/2015/01/09

They developed this specifically to interact with systems like SmartThings. Until Hub V2 is released with BLE we are looking at this as the best way to integrate with the August locks.

Isn’t the point of the Connect was so that ST can talk to the lock without BLE since the Connect is a wifi bridge?

Yup. That’s what I said.

Oh sorry I misread your message, thinking you meant hub v2 is needed for the Connect to work. Are you able to report how far along your guys are on implementing ST with the Connect?

I know we are working directly with August but I do not have a timeframe.

Hey @Ben, any thoughts on how this new August-like product could integrate with ST or whether you guys have already been working on it?

I wouldn’t think Sesame was ready to evaluate yet. And rather than fixing the problems of, say, Lockitron v1, it looks like it compounds them.

First, the accelerometer is going to eat batteries under real world conditions. And trigger a lot of false opens. The problem is that different doors have different acoustic properties. The technology exists for sealed room applications, but it has a high failure rate in the field.

(See Lockitron, who dropped the knock recognition feature for v2.

Lockitron FAQ: We found that certain doors would trigger the knock sensor too easily, thus keeping the crowdfunded Lockitron awake and draining batteries while other doors would require significant knocking before the sensor triggered.

second is this Sesame “feature”:

Sesame is attached to your existing deadbolt using a strip of 3M adhesive — and that’s it.

For a deadbolt actuator on an exterior door that’s also unlikely to survive field conditions. Varying door materials, temperatures, vibration from the motor, frequency of use, even the knock pattern will likely lead to adhesive failure.

If they can make it work well enough for commercial release, great, but I’d wait awhile before assigning any resources to integration with it.

Just my feeling…

First off, how many videos can Adam Lisagor do?

Second that looks pretty cool and at a good price point. I am sure we will look at it. And am also sure a community member will beat us to the punch.
