The only non-iOS device I have laying around is an Amazon Fire Phone. Will this work on it?
Hi, Does LAnnouncer support other language other than English? i tried to set the Google TTS to other language but not working. Is Lannouncer hard corded to speak English only? Thanks
LANNouncer is not hardcoded to speak only English. I would guess that if you put Spanish in there, and had your device locale to Spanish, it would work but I haven’t tested.
Hi Tony, I have tried to put on other language character and it sound silence. Seems it is working on English only. Looking into Google TTS API, seems it need to put on Character set when calling the speech API, Not sure if i am looking at the wrong thing
Hi Tony, I just tried again today and reboot my android device after the installation of other language pack in TTS, it is working perfect now. Thanks
I have a tablet running Action Tiles and Lannouncer. For some reason about every other day I have to restart Lannouncer. It just seems to quit working. I can’t seem to figure out what might be causing it. Any ideas of what to look for?
Refreshing my question. Looking for possible ideas as to why I have to keep restarting Lannouncer.
Does LANnouncer actually quit on it’s own somehow? What type of Android device are you using and what OS?
I am using a Android tablet. I will realize that I’m not hearing anything. I go in and just touch on the lannouncer icon. It opens, everything looks good. I hit the back button to go back to my actiontiles screen. For the next day or so I get the voice announcements. Then it stops and I repeat the whole process.
I have an 8" Insignia Android tablet with the same setup as yours and I haven’t had any issues with LANnouncer shutting down. Have you tried resetting the tablet to factory defaults?
Are you connected through Bluetooth to a speaker? I know that my Bluetooth sometimes loses connection so I just use the tablet’s sound which is good enough for me. I also have my tablet set to never sleep. I’m not sure why you have to restart every few days. Maybe some other background program causing interference? I keep mine stock without too many programs running in the background. Try not to run ActionTiles and see what happens.
Not using bluetooth. Tablet is pretty much barebones. The only things running, by me anyway, is actiontiles in Fully Kiosk, Tasker, and Lannouncer.
Did you try the troubleshooting steps on the website?
BTW, don’t hit the back button. Hit “home”. Hitting “back” tells Android to shut down the app.
What Jim was asking was… brand of tablet, which version of Android.
Sorry for missing the info. It is a Nexus 7 running Android 5.1.
I do hit the home button, not the back button. Sorry again for misspeaking here.
I realize there is probably something on this tablet that is causing the problem, just need some help figuring out what to look for. I appreciate all the comments so far.
I have been trying to install Lannouncer on raspberry PI running on android things.
So far, I know lannouncer is running sending request is being printed out in logcat.
Bluetooth paring from command line is not easy, so trying to use line-in.
Will keep thread updated
Hello! Probably stupid question, but I’m stumped when it comes to inputting the IP Address for the device; we have dynamic IPs that change, how do I handle that?
When running LANnouncer on your Android device, it will show what IP address is being used. That is the IP address that you need to enter into the Device Handler in your SmartThings app. If you leave your Android device on all the time and don’t reboot it, the IP will not change. In most case, even after a reboot, your router will usually re-assign the same IP#. If it does change, then you will need to update your device handler in the SmartThings app. It usually doesn’t change too often so it’s not really an issue.
On a more technical note, you can optionally go into your router setup and manually assign a fixed IP for your Android device
Great answers. You can also tell your Android device to always use the same address. The router will usually respect it. Just give it, as a static ip, the same one LANNouncer is reporting.
I have been using Lannouncer on an older tablet that is running Android 5.1. Works great. However, that tablet is starting to die…RIP. I have a newer tablet, but it is only Android 4.* and is not updateable, Go figure.
So Lannouncer won’t run on it. Does anybody know a good alternative that works as good as Lannouncer?
There’s some discussion on alternatives using VLC Thing here but another option is just pick up a really cheap $20 Android phone from Walmart and simply use that to run LANnouncer. That is basically what I did.
