Android as a Speech/Alarm Device released! And Updated!

…In at least one case, I have a situation where there are two configured rules that tell LANnouncer to say something at the same time. As I’m sure you know, the second one to fire cuts off the first one in mid-sentence…[/quote]

I think I found the only part of the thread that has addressed this so far…

So, is that the only solution anybody has been able to work with?
If so, I will simply go edit my Rule Machine rules (and then CoRE when I get going with it) to stager the announcements.

One more question…for those using this staggered/delayed approach, does it seem to work well enough, and did you have to play with it for a while to get the delay period right?

I haven’t paid too much attention to this issue lately as I only had a few times where I wanted to have multiple statements. If I remember correctly, part of the problem is the inconsistency of delays that are less than a minute due to the ST cloud or possibly other factors. It was just a bit of trial and error to get the timing right and that wasn’t always consistent. Lately, I have realized that it was just better to keep things simple or to just one statement because it gets really old fast to have a “chatty cathy” notification.

Probably being a bit thick as ever, but I have Smartthings devices driving CoRe pistons triggering Big Talker which in turn triggers LANnouncer and that gets Alexa saying stuff. All great.
However, when it triggers I I want Alexa’s volume to go to Maximum (and then ideally return to previous setting or a fixed setting I enter). I’ve got the LANnouncer android driver at max but Alexa isn’t loud enough.
I have a feeling I’ve done this once but for the life of me I can’t find it. Maybe it was when I was playing with VLCThing though. Can I do this with current set-up?

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, I do not think there is a way to control Alexa’s volume except through voice commands or manually with the volume ring. Setting Alexa’s volume high will most likely be too loud for other uses. You may want to consider using a separate speaker for just LANnouncer voice notifications.

I don’t think that can be done. LANNouncer has a volume setting per type of alert, but Alexa’s volume is independent of that and cannot be set by Bluetooth or connected devices.

If there’s significant demand, I’ll add that feature. Trouble is, if you play a song to announce something (e.g. George Thorogood’s Bad to the Bone to announce arrival of a motorcyle buddy, purely hypothetical), it would delay for 3.5 minutes any other sounds. They can’t be mixed. And those other sounds could be more important.

That’s SmartThings support for you. It’s been pretty bad. Remember those weekly Alex sessions? Or the support for Rules Machine? We’re like alpha testers for the output of a work-release program.

Hi, the strobe command is not working on my Nexus 6P running android 7.1.1 but it’s working fine on my other phone OnePlus One running android 6.0.1. is this a known issue or it’s just me. Thanks

@NWTony Installed LANNouncer on an old Amazon Fire and Amazonbasics Powered Speakers that were lying around doing nothing. Now we get announcements and sirens.

Couple quick question

I purchased you a martini for all the hard work. Is there a Premium version and if so, how do you upgrade to that version?

Is there a way to change to default voice? I downloaded and selected several text-to-voice profiles but that doesn’t make a difference.

Thanks again!

@NWTony - Very nice product/integration to ST. I finally have a use for my 2012 Nexus 7 :-). When playing audio via TTS, I am assuming the synthesis is happening locally and the audio is never sent to the cloud.

Thank you

Hey wasim… I haven’t even SEEN Android 7.1.1, so it’s not known but entirely possible.

@goody1017 I’ll look for your email and ID to set. I’ve been travelling a lot.1 The default TTS voice is used, which is changed in Android settings. If it isn’t working tonight, send me the registered email address, as I don’t see “goody1017”, but have now cleared my backlog.

@bug666 Correct, no audio to the cloud.

I changed the default TTS voice but still hearing the same voice. Any suggestions?

ive setup lannouncer with bigtalker and it works. I find that the integration of smartThings with a plugged in bluetooth speaker with an old tablet is more consistent. I just downloaded a notification reader app and set it to read the smart things app notifications (but skip the app name when reading it). It’s fairly straightforward getting custom notifications through the automation section of the smartthings app. I still have lannouncer but occasionally it won’t start or other problems. The notification reader has been very consistent. (I’m using the app called “out loud” but there are many TTS choices.

Anywhere I can find APK that will run on Android 4? All the ones I find ( require 5+ by the description ) I get a package parsing error when I try to install on old GS4 or Amazon Firephone.

Unfortunately, LANnouncer requires at least OS 5.1 Lolipop or better due to some critical features only available in this version.

Can you clear some questions about Lanouncer and Big Talker

Followed the install instructions to the letter i think

Do i install Lanouncer on the phone/ tablet i want to speak? does it need pairing with a speaker?

I have installed it on an old android phone with version 6 on (HTC)
When in the smartthings app i press any of the buttons , a notification appears in the bottom section of the app on my HTC ( no sound )
Have i missed something out , i cant’t see if i have or not

On the IDE logging it shows stuff happening
New at this kinda stuff

Edit …woo hoo started working somehow , I must be better than I thought
Cheers for this it’s great

Hi, @Originaltrav.

  1. Yes, you install it on the device you want doing the talking/playing the sound/taking the photo/flashing.
  2. No, it does not have to be paired with a speaker. It will use the tablet/phone’s speaker or whatever you plug into the headphone jack if you don’t pair it. The internal speakers can be enough sound on HTC and Samsung devices, but probably isn’t loud enough on cheap devices. I use a standard computer speaker plugged into it, not paired, and that works fine.
  3. You have to install the LANNounder device code in SmartThings also, and tell it the IP Address of your phone. So SmartThings should list your phone as a LANNouncer device in SmartThings.
  4. There are volume settings inside LANNouncer’s settings; ensure they’re all on.

I installed Lannoucer on my Nvidia Shield TV and it’s working great with Smartthings and Big Talker with little to no delay. The only issue is the text-to-speech is very loud. Is it possible to ungray the text-to-speech volume setting on the settings screen? Thanks for all your efforts.

Any chance for a Raspberry Pi version of Lannouncer?

Hello… I’ve been reading all this but I’m lost… I downloaded lannouncer onto my tablet and that’s where im stuck… I got as far as creating the device handler… when I go to put the device… the hub and location tabs don’t have anything so I can’t move forward with setting this up…I really need help!! Thanks in advance
