Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Future Hubs

The announcement that “some hubs” would have support discontinued last year was a wake up call for me. If I had to buy a new hub, I as going to make sure to buy into a home automation platform that would continue to work even if support was removed (firmware updates, cloud processing, etc). There are lots of options in this space, including the one that “rhymes with cat”, which is what handles almost everything for my house these days.

That is, I bought a Hubitat last year.

It’s code compatible with SmartThings Groovy SmartApps and DTHs. It was simple to move over. I’ve used it to make reliable automations (things happen on based upon time, motion or open/close events). Some people complain that the app isn’t “pretty”, but that doesn’t matter since I never use it on a day-to-day basis (only for occasionally settings things up).

And even if Hubitat goes under, my installation will remain functioning as all the automation is local. They can’t decide to brick my hub.

A worse doom then being forced to use the new app awaits me – soon my kitchen will get gutted and we will be without it for 3-4 weeks. While the cabinets and backsplash are being replaced, I’ll have the opportunity to replace 4+ outlets and 4+ switches. I’m wondering what I should do in 3 areas: Outlets As it is a kitchen, all the outlets are GFCI on individual circuits (as best as I can tell). I don’t actually need controlled outlets in there; my thought was only to install a Zigbee and a Z-wave outlet just as repeaters. But since GFCI controlled outlets doesn’t seem to a thing (I’ve just read 3-4 threads about that), I’m wondering if I should just remain with regular dumb outlets. . If I go with dumb outlets, are there other repeaters I could/should hide in the outlet box? (I’ve…
