Alternative to SmartThings

Please advise on best alternative to SmartThings as I got enough of forced updates and constant problems with zigbee devices going offline or not responding.

Definitely has the features, but be prepared for a steeper learning curve, more complex ui and more maintenance.

This could be an issue with the strength of your zigbee mesh. Changing ecosystem won’t necessarily solve this if that’s the root cause.

I would say Homey and Apple home are probably most comparable balance of ease of use and features. I’d say if you’re going to go any more nerdy than ST or Homey, you may as well go Home Assistant.

But as @Declankh said you could have a Zigbee range or interference issue which you could also have with any of those systems. I’d do some basic zigbee trouble shooting like move your hub to a new location, lookup zigbee and wifi band conflicts, add more repeaters, etc.

I moved from SmartThings to Hubitat in 2020. It was the best thing I ever did. All my automations ran locally from day 1. Back then I was able to continue using all my Groovy smartapps on Hubitat (before SmartThings turned it all off). The ability to control when things get updated is paramount. My 160 Zigbee devices work great.

I also use Home Assistant (HA) on a RaspPi3 in a small way, and share devices between it and my 2 Hubitat hubs. All that device sharing happens locally directly between the hubs. But the only reason I use HA was for it’s Apple HomeKit emulation, so that I could monitor/control my Ecobee thermostats locally. Hubitat recently added that same type of HomeKit emulation, so I’ll soon be moving that integration away from HA.

Both platforms have something that SmartThings lost somewhere 7+ years ago: The developers are key users of the system. That things function smartly is important to them day-to-day. There aren’t separate teams developing parts of the system in isolation (e.g., SmartThings app vs. the hub).
