2016/12/09: SmartTiles Launcher not working for some users... Investigating

Here’s my result of the same URL:

  1. Intermittent or every time?
  2. What’s your browser and OS, please?
  3. Any special plug-ins, add-block, etc.? Please try disabled?
  4. Is NA01 your current shard, to the best of your knowledge?
  5. Please try browser debugger (Ctrl-Shift-I in Chrome, Firefox) and see if perchance any messages in Console tab.

Sorry for the inconvenience… You’re only the second report of this problem, but … something weird is happening.

We haven’t changed anything on our end … well, not on purpose.

Every time.

Chrome browser on Win 10

I did just try it on IE and it is working. I closed and re-opened Chrome and still occurring.

Here is the Console tab from Chrome:

Thanks for the details. I have a clue now what’s going on, though I don’t know why it happened without any changes on our end.

And it doesn’t explain why it works for my browsers and not yours; but the “internet” is complicated ;-).

Please try these as it may be confirmation:

and also this:

http://smarttiles.click/me/?app=de5fa274-c1a9-4406-8c22-ab9a7b1e2e69&shard=NA01&label=Primary%20Dashboard

Just tried both and neither are working in Chrome.

I am heading into work in a few minutes and can check Chrome on my work PC (Windows 7).

Thanks, Brian.

While you were typing I was doing some Googling…

This is not an uncommon problem (in general) with sites that pull jquery libraries from CDN (content distribution networks), and may be the cause of sudden configuration changes on those sources. This
could end up being a temporary problem (I hope), because our ability to solve may be out of our hands…

Then again, I have several ideas, … I’m just researching and thinking about which to try first.

Too bad that I can’t replicate directly (though I’m working on that too!), since it makes it tedious to determine if I have fixed the problem! :scream:

####If you happen to have the time, here is how to get a more detail network trace log that could help me further:

You can email the result to: Support@SmartTiles.click

Thank-you very very much for your help!

  • Are you running a firewall on the PC where this fails?
  • Do you have proxy server setting?

Those could be a couple of the “co-factor triggers” for this issue. Temporarily disabling Firewall and/or Proxy would confirm. It would not be a desirable long-term solution, so I am definitely still exploring to see what options are under our control.

I certainly appreciate you testing other machines, networks, and/or browsers.

And, since ActionTiles doesn’t need or use the “Launcher”, hopefully we bypass the issue.

It is working for me in Chrome at work on Windows 7.

I may try rebooting the machine when I get home and re-visit if it is still an issue. If it doesn’t resolve it, I will post more details then.

We actually made a “fix-attempt” while you were on the way to work  … so your current success may be due to our fix rather than your location.

If you get a moment; you can test the unpatched Launcher at the URL below; as I’m curious as to whether or not the issue will show up at your work location:

My problem seemed to be that I was unknowingly logged out. I’m assuming it’s some sort of “time out” thing in the app. I went back and logged in and everything was fine. I’ve spoken to a few others who had this same problem and that’s what clued me in to the login issue.

The unpatched one is working fine at work for me.

As it is for me  … that’s why I suspect … firewall? proxy? browser version? cache? random CDN? or maybe the problem has gone away?

Oh well… Hopefully the “hotfix” we deployed turns out to be a permanent stable solution.

Thanks again!

Login timeout is normal and something we cannot fix in SmartTiles v5.8… the login session is managed by SmartThings and is out of our hands. See the main SmartTiles thread for suggestions.

The login issue is completely resolved in upcoming rearchitected “V6 (ActionTiles)”.

I got home tonight and did not reboot my PC. Just re-opened Chrome and tried out my bookmarked launcher.

It worked.

Thanks!

EDIT: Spoke too soon… It launched, but when it goes to my dashboard, it just shows a super enlarged version of my weather tile and has the icon set in the middle for a disconnect

Darn…

Browser debug console log output please? (Do a refresh … probably just of the dashboard itself).

There’s actually a good chance this is the same problem but a different place. The Launcher is a distinct web page from the Dashboards. The patch we put in for the Launcher (due to something changing out in the “interwebs” out of our control, may also be needed in the SmartTiles Dashboard SmartApp too… problem is, that takes SmartThings quite a long time to distribute.

Perhaps mother nature is trying to tell us to hurry up and get ActionTiles launched!.

Let’s see what the logs indicate and cross-fingers that maybe the external library is having a temporary problem… Thanks!

The last bit is my cameras… I am not too concerned about them. I was in the process of setting them up for outside access, but never finished the project. Although the one is my weather video tile.

And… It’s fixed.
It was really simple… And now I feel stupid.

Looks like a Javascript crash. Not sure why closing the browser and re-opening wouldn’t fix it, but a CTRL + F5 (refresh with javascript reload) worked.

EDIT: And I can close it and re-open it through the launcher successfully. Doesn’t require a refresh each time I launch. Guess that’s one to put in the knowledgebase for future reference.

Glad it’s working … don’t feel stupid!

There was at least one other report of the second situation (corrupt dashboard) in the past couple of days, and they are likely related.

That “Too many redirects” error is not a good thing, and our fix to the Launcher hopefully will hold. Since I can’t replicate the error on demand, it’s going to be tough to figure out other possible solutions.

Forcing a refresh (i.e., Ctrl-F5 to ensure not pulling from cache…) is not a bad idea, as it will attempt to reload the damaged resource, and, if we’re lucky, it will be successful.

Have a great weekend! Thanks for all the diagnostic assistance. We haven’t seen this in ActionTiles Beta … but, technically, it is still “possible” – but now we are much better prepared to deal with it.

@tgauchat @diehllane I had the same issue with only the help button showing up on my tablet. Mine is fixed now by force closing Chrome and clearing the cache.

Great to hear!

We think perhaps JQuery library got corrupted and a refresh fixes it. We can’t force a refresh until V6/ActionTiles.

I’ve seen this a lot… figured it was some kind of authentication issue on the ST side, like a pseudo-403.

I have four distinct behaviors when using SmartTiles, seemingly at random:

  • It works fine
  • It asks me to log in, and the username / password fields are logged in
  • It asks me to log in, and the username field is filled in but the password is not
  • It gives me the error above

I figure it’s some weird load balancer / cache combination, auto logoff thing or something of the sort and just chalk it up to “expected behavior”
