Z-Wave is going open source today

To clarify, you’ve already been able to get the full specification needed to communicate with a zwave device.

This new project is about the specifications for the hardware side, and allows device manufacturers to (legally) build zwave devices without having to buy a SI Labs chip.

It also allows developer members of the alliance to more easily make suggestions for improvements or new features to the protocol, but doesn’t change the specification or certification process.

interesting. I thought they opened up the chip side to other vendors a year or two ago? I guess that was just the announcement and now its live.

They opened it up, but initially it was a closed NDA “by agreement” situation. Now it’s open source.
