Z-Wave + integrated blinds/shades: Custom Graber Virtual Cord Shades

I’m just getting around to doing this (my blinds are 20’ up, so it’s pain in the a$$). I managed to get the master remote to pair with the first blind. It works. I can’t get the same master remote to pair with the second blind though. I briefly pushed the paperclip, and then pushed the button on the blind until it flashed green and pumped up and down. However, when I use the remote, only the 1st blind responds.

EDIT: I just got off the phone with the support line for the manufacturer. They said that there is one other important step for the “Master Remote” to pair with multiple devices. It needs to be fully reset before you add it to SmartThings and start repairing. To fully reset it, hold the paperclip until it flashes green, then yellow, then red…and finally stops…then let go. Then you can start the connection process.

@ZebraBlinds, thank you for posting all of the amazing videos.

Earlier today I was unable to control one of my blinds through the ST hub. I tried to factory reset and restart the paring process. The hub no longer recognizes the blinds.

Any idea?

If you tried a factory reset, it might still not be excluded from ST. So just follow these steps:

@ZebraBlinds

Neal - I’m in the middle of installing a 6-window Graber Virtual Cord solar shade set. Got the bottom three done last night and they look and work great! I’ve already integrated them with ST and setup a group with Shady, and have asked Alexa ‘open the blinds’ with a routine.

Except…

I’ve discovered that either the hem or the sill on the center window is a little off-square because when the blind travels to its bottom extent. The hem line is not in-line with the sill, leaving a small (~1/8 in.) gap on the left side while it’s resting on the sill on the right. (It’s driving my wife batty)

I’ve already let the shade all the way out and reset the bottom limit just incase it was an error in the wind of the fabric, but that doesn’t appear to be the issue. I don’t think the solution is to rehang the blind - as hanging off-plumb doesn’t seem like a great idea. Is there an easy way to adjust the hem bar before I go disassemble this thing and screw something up?

Thanks

Would you be able to send in a few pics showing how bad it is to support@zebrablinds.com or .ca (depending on Canada or the US). Also just to rule out the sill can you check it with a leveler. If it’s the hembar we should be able to get the instructions to correct it over, but, if it is we would like to bring it to Graber’s attention, they’re usually pretty good about things like this.

Hi,

I’m having trouble pairing my blinds with the ST hub. I followed all the directions in the video, and it looks like everything is working correctly, however, when I get to the step where ST is supposed to search for the blinds, it never finds anything. Is it possible my hub is too far from the blinds? (they are on opposite sides of the house) And if so, could I bring the blinds to the hub just for pairing, and then move them back to the window, or will the connection break when I do that?

Thanks
Jesse

If you’re sure that the blinds are in pairing mode (I found it difficult to do at first but eventually got the hang of the button-press timing as I paired more shades), then yes that’s possible. It depends on the size of your house, what’s in your walls that could further attenuate the z-wave signal etc.

That might help, if the issue is distance. Newer generation z-wave chips are better about pairing farther away from the controller, although I don’t think these blinds are z-wave plus (the newest generation).

You could try it, and if it pairs correctly, then that helps confirm it’s a signal issue related to distance. Alternatively you can bring the hub to the shades with a long Ethernet cable (and an extension power cord if you don’t have batteries in the hub), since moving the shades sounds like a PITA.

If the shades go back to not functioning well when both the shades and hub are back in their usual locations, then you could add z-wave devices that repeat the signal, run a z-wave mesh repair and that would likely help.

As @marktheknife mentioned, it can be a range issue in which case a repeater will be needed. One question, does the shade job like its supposed to when pairing? During the add a thing part the shade is supposed to jog when its paired to ST then show up in the app. This step can be bugged sometimes where the shade jogs but ST doesn’t show anything. If this happens just back out of add a thing, and then go back into it and the device will show up. It’s a bug on ST’s end and I have it happen occasionally on my hub with devices.

Since I can’t edit the original post anymore, over the weekend I’ll create a new thread with all the current information compiled and organized in the first post.
