What do you use IFTTT for with SmartThings? (Examples and Ideas) šŸ˜Ž

Okay, here’s the app:

In my initial testing it works correctly for me, but I’d love to hear is anyone else finds this useful and if it works for them.

Note that you need to install the device type linked in the README file. It’s just the ST momentary on/off button tile but with my namespace so that it can be used to create the child devices.

I use IFTTT for the following items.

  1. Quirky Spotter
Since I came over from Wink the only thing that I couldn’t get to integrate directly with ST was the Spotter. Well I need my spotter for what it does. It monitors the temp in my crawl space since that is where my servers are at for my house. When the temp reaches 72 IFTTT tells ST to activate a ZWave plugin module which controls my exhaust fan to start piping the hot air out of the space. Once the space hits 70 then it shuts the fan back off.

  2. Freezer Temp
Over the summer we had a freezer failure (faulty defrost timer) and we lost all of our food. So we got a zwave thermometer and if the temp reaches 20 (Took a few times to figure out a good threshold since when the defrost cycle runs the freezer actually can warm up quite a bit) so IFTTT then calls me if it gets too hot in the freezer so we can react and take care of it.

  3. Sump Pumps
When we had wink we got 2 of their moisture sensors to monitor each of our sump pumps. If they detect water then IFTTT will call me and let me know which sump is having an issue. With testing the second I closed the contacts on the moisture sensor IFTTT was already calling me I was impressed with how quick it worked.

I’m also using IFTTT to turn off my security cameras if it rains. In the past, I’ve gotten so many email alerts from lightning that Google locked me out of my Gmail account.

I just started using iftttt Also , but for freezer temps I use shm. It has custom rules and alerts you if a freezer gets too hot.

I use mine with my iSmartAlarm. I had it before ST and still prefer it over using ST as an alarm system.

I have IFTTT rules that disarm the alarm when coming home to an empty house. It can also arm it when everyone leaves. Also have it disarm in the morning whenever I walk out of my room.

Has anybody from ST explained why we cannot use routines or modes in IFTTT? I couldn’t find this in the search. Certainly would make it more powerful. Obviously can work around with virtual switch but still.

I’m curious if you have any cameras from iSmartAlarm, and if they offer a normal streaming video URL, or only allow vid to be accessed through the iSmartAlarm App.

I like the price on the new iSA Spot cameras, but I need a streaming URL from them to use with SmartTiles.

This drives me crazy as well. Don’t understand why I can’t just trigger a routine based on another action. Virtual switches for this are just annoying.

Yes, I do have an iCamera keep. It does not have a streaming URL that I know of - you can only stream through their app. That would be awesome, though.

The spot camera is interesting, but I was actually hoping it would just be a small battery-operated sensor that would pick up the sounds like smoke alarms and glass breaking. Having to deal with mounting a camera with a cable is just not practical in most cases for me.

What kind of temperature sensor are you using? We have an external deep freeze with an open/close sensor, but that has mislead us a couple of times. Does a regular multi-sensor work in there? We have it at -8 Fahrenheit.

Thank you!

We’re using one of these http://amzn.com/B00RYWBBU0. Yes it will get a little sluggish when you push the buttons lol. According to it we keep our freezer at -4 and it works just fine. Yes it will go through batteries faster but thats a small price to pay to keep our food cold.

I’ve been trying to use IFTTT to trigger a circulation fan in my garage based on the current weather condition and also to autoclose my garage door using a wemo maker if it happened to get left open overnight.

I’ve started using IFTTT as a back-up trigger for my routines as my scheduled events fall over regularly.I use a momentary switch. So far it hasn’t failed me.

I’m happy to announce that the new SkyBell HD IFTTT Channel is ready. We provide Triggers and Actions. You can receive push button and motion sensor triggers AND start live video feeds, change LED color and turn on Silent Mode. Check it out: https://ifttt.com/skybell

I am bumping up this thread, as the use of IFTTT has literally exploded in recent weeks since SmartThings channel has been ROCK SOLID for a month now. Great work SmartThings team. @slagle , please share with your team. The recent efforts are paying off. Please keep up the good work!

So, I am making use of IFTTT to integrate the following non ST devices.

Automatic for various driving related activities
Abode for arming/disarming and 433mhz sensors
Nest Cam for motion and sound detection
Arlo cam for motion detection
Life 360 for various locations within my circle
Rachio for some sprinklers control
Alexa for texting shopping lists
Wemo Coffee for brewing my morning coffee

Just got an Automatic for my wife’s car this week and love it. My Sonos will tell me when she made it to work & tell me when she’s leaving work with the help of IFTTT. (That helps me to figure out when to start the grill for dinner.)

I was hoping to have the ability to ask Alexa how much gas was in her car, but her cars computer doesn’t have that capability.

Yeah, my Alexa integration lacks substance. We both have the same make and model, so is pointless to ask Alexa anything, because I don’t know which car she’s talking about. Luckily, I can ask Alexa via ā€˜my home’ skill and she’ll tell me which car is in the garage.

Are routines still not working? Or are they just not working for me?

Found this recipe but none of my routines show up.

I don’t know about that recipe, but routines work fine as long as you have associated them to a virtual switch.

There is a smart app in the marketplace which is specifically for that purpose. It’s very popular and has been around for a long time so that it uses the older terminology ā€œhome phraseā€ instead of ā€œroutineā€ but it’s the same thing.

To use it, first create a virtual switch.

Authorize its use in IFTTT.

Then do the following:

One) open the mobile app and go to the marketplace section.

  1. choose smart apps, then lights and switches, and scroll down until you see the following.

  1. install that smart APP and just follow its directions.

Once you have the virtual switch associated to a routine, you can then use it in an IFTTT recipe.

My new uses are all about getting ST sensors to report to my much, much better but not Zigbee compatible Indigo home automation system. Plus controlling a few non-Hue compatible lights: a Sengeld, a Sylvania IQlight, two OSRAM Gardenlights.

So Indigo can natively send a URL request to the Maker Channel of IFTTT, which then tells ST to do something. That last part works most of the time–IFTTT says it did its stuff, but sometimes my hub ignores it. Typical!

Gotta use the Maker channel because IFTTT has never responded to Indigodomo’s request for info on how to develop an Indigo channel.

Also, I use IFTTT’s ST channel to Gmail to Indigo’s Better Email Plugin to receive state changes from the Iris contact sensors I already owned from when I used ST but that aren’t compatible with Indigo. Surprisingly fast response there, but that’s because the Better Email Plugin supports IDLE SMTP connections.

It has been a week or less, and it is working pretty well, to the point I’ll start really incorporating both sides of it into more automation routines now.

Coming up I expect to start using Automatic to tell Indigo I’m home, and iOS Location too.
