I visited the documentation pages today and was pleased to see that ‘OAuth’ apps have had their documentation dramatically enhanced. It seems that API Access has won the battle of the branding, despite having been around for years and largely ignored.
However Webhook SmartApps, and their Lambda siblings, seem to have disappeared completely.
I popped over to the Developer Workspace to find that it will be deprecated from May 2026 in favour of the Developer Center (sic) which seems to mean the SmartThings Console in practice. It doesn’t seem to have noticed it is already July. The Console knows nothing of apps, and even links back to the Developer Workspace for things it does know about.
SmartApps for cloud device integration vanished from the Developer Workspace a long time ago but curiously were still referenced in the developer documentation (not documented, just referenced). It was never explained why. Now things aren’t looking promising for SmartApps for automations.
I won’t shed a tear for the Developer Workspace, but since it has always been the only way to publish the SmartApps it would be nice to know what is going on.
It has always been rather incongruous that the WebHook and Lambda apps have enjoyed some of the better documentation for years, but in all other aspects have gone completely unheralded.
So what is the score? Are we meant to stop using the things? If so it would have been helpful to know a long time ago.
