Tasker + Autovoice + Sharptools Android ST Voice Control Profiles

Have you thought about getting a Google Home? I heard that if you have a phone with Assistant, it will start controlling smart things devices natively via the phone once you connect the Home. This would remove the need to use tasker at all. I have even heard of people borrowing someone elses Home device, hooking it up temporarily and then supposedly even after you disconnect the device and remove your account, your phone assistant will continue to maintain the integration w smart things.
I just got a google home which has worked great to replace the android tablet /tasker setup I had for voice control before, but I dont have a phone w assistant so I cant speak from personal experience on that part.

Hi Jeremy,
I read through the workaround. It looked straight forward enough though there are a few steps. I would double check each step. The setting I previously mentioned is here:

Click on Google Now/Assistant Integration

Click on advanced

Make sure always cancel ok Google is not checked. If that is not the issue, it had to have something to do with the Google assistant integration which I have not used. I’m running this on a Galaxy S5 using Google Now.

Let me know how it works.

The only problem with Google home at the moment is that it is tied to a single account. If I use my account, then anyone has access to it. Even guests. If I set up ā€œhouseā€ account, then I lose access to my ā€œstuffā€. I’m sure they will figure it out in time. It is very cool the way you describe the integration though. I kind of consider Google home to still be in beta, though it looks like it will be a device I will eventually have in my living room and bedroom after they get the kinks worked out.

Personally, I still used the mini-motes a lot more than voice control. I have 4 scattered around the house. The last 2 I got for $13 each. Pretty darn cheap for what they do.

Best Regards,
Steve

Thank you for your help Steve. Cancel OK Google has been unchecked the whole time, so you’re right it has to do with the integration.

It’s a long mess using ifttt, join, and tasker. I checked my ifttt applet and that looks good, as far as I can tell, but join is still a little confusing to me. The fact that I can use voice control through Google tells me that I set it up correctly so I’m not sure where to go from here.

Not sure if it’s a coincidence but I remember having everything working great until I started messing with virtual switches in order to control multiple lights at a time. I first started creating them through Alexa helper and editing it on the computer, then I found it easier to just create them all from the computer instead. I can’t think of any possible reason why this would change the behavior of Google assistant though.

Google home sounds really great but I just bought a few Amazon dots and the wife would kill me if I went and bought that right now. Eventually, I’m sure I’ll get one though.

Just for testing, what happens if you disable autovoice? I haven’t used join yet. Maybe try disabling that. I would do one at a time until functionality returns, hopefully… from there we can figure out what is going on. I would set it up here to test it but am not sure I can duplicate your setup with allo.

Please Let me know how the dots work out. At that price point I was considering them.

Yep, still out of town. Going to be back on the 1st and then update with changes.

Thanks Neal. That’s been a LONG couple week trip for you.

Yep, it started as a trip that was 6 days… then my company kept on moving my return ticket back home and gave me more work. Well, the ticket can’t be changed anymore so I know I will be back for sure.

So I figured out the problem. I had my trigger phrase on IFTTT set to ā€œpleaseā€ and as soon as I changed it back to ā€œwhy don’t youā€ everything started working great again. Thank you for all your help.

Also, one more thing I wanted to ask. Is there a way for open/close to be understood as on/off? The only way I can get Alexa to open my garage is by placing my garage door in a virtual switch. So now I can ask Alexa to open the garage by saying ā€œturn on the garageā€ and it works. Apparently Amazon removed the open/close command for security reasons. However, since we are using Tasker to work with Google is there a profile I can add which allows ā€œopenā€ to work without needing to use the virtual switch?

Glad you got it working again.

If memory serves me correctly, that is one of the things that will be included in the next update. Right now, there is no way to make it work unless you write a seperate profile in tasker for you garage doors.

My wife and I love the dots. They are very handy when it comes to changing the lights and triggering some of our smartthings routines. The built in speaker isn’t that great but I have it paired to a JBL Flip 3 laying around and it works great for music.

Also, there are some neat apps to try if you can remember the names when trying to open them. Otherwise you’d have to open the Alexa app and see which skills you have enabled.

One thing I wish the dots could do is sync music with each other so you could bring sound into multiple rooms. Right now they all respond individually according to which one is closest to you. Overall, for the price, I think it’s definitely worth it. That’s the only reason I passed on the echo.

Thank you! I’ll have to mess around with Tasker, when I get a chance, and see if I can get that set up. At least I have it working right now so that’s all that matters.

agree that the lack of multiple accts on google home is a big flaw.
I just thought it was interesting how it enables Assistant on the phone to start controlling ST directly once connected. seems like it would be a simple step for google to allow assistant to control ST without needing Home at all, and I wonder if is a feature we may see soon…however those of us still stuck with Google Now will still need to use tasker and sharptools regardless until Assistant is released for non-pixel devices

Do you think the use of the Allo app would give us access to the assistant for control purposes? I’ve been pretty happy with Google Now overall and was actually surprised Google released a separate product when it seemed a likely extension of Google Now. A lousy product if you are to trust the reviews on Google play. I looked at it but putting stickers on a text message seems more suited to a teenage girl than a middle aged man. LOL. I guess they really want to push the pixel phones to give full access to the assistant. Maybe they will add it to the Now launcher. Who knows. It seems like everyone wants to have a separate app for everything. I figured my next phone would have to be a 32GB model but if the trend continues, it might need 64GB.

Maybe I’ll have to add a couple dots to my Christmas list. They would work well on my headboard hooked up to the external speakers and I could figure something out in the living room. I wished the dots would sync though. That’s the only thing that is really drawing me to the Chromecast audios for my complete in home audio system. If I get the audios, then the Google Home should be a better choice. Too many choices, each with their own pros and cons. Maybe I should just get 2 of everything. Thanks for the review.

No luck with the assistant in Allo, just tried it. I think its only available on the assistant thats baked in android 7.0. Yet more fragmentation from Google :frowning:

You are much more energetic than I am at this time of night. My biggest accomplishment this evening was 3 episodes of Game of Thrones and a couple half hour cartoon comedies. I hear my bed calling now.

I did write a new smart app for my living room lights to be controlled by motion and lux this afternoon (I couldn’t find anything pre-made that would do what I wanted in the last 2 years so I finally broke down and wrote the app) but, I got pretty lazy after dinner.

Thank you for trying it and sharing. I was actually thinking of playing with it tomorrow or Thursday.

Now I guess I’ll just refine my app code or heaven forbid, clean up some leaves. Maybe I’ll automate the hallway light. I still have unused devices laying around.

I get a plugin error. But I have full versions of Tasker and SharpTools with the Tasker plugin installed.
