How did you get to that part?
After hitting the reset button on the bottom of the unit, you hold the top switch button down until the Android recovery screen comes up. You then factory reset the unit and wait for it to finish. When done and you are back the the wink start up screen you add your wifi info but do not start the wink set up process. At the screen that asks you to sign in to wink you place you finger over the proximity sensor and the hold the bottom switch button until the relay starts clicking. At that point you can release the sensor and button and you should see the Android lock screen. I have made it that far and messed around with the settings but canât really do anything other than that. There are no navigation keys so once you go forward there is no going back. I wanted to try and add a Bluetooth controller of some kind to see if it would help with navigation but I have not had the tame here recently to attempt it. Hope that helps.
So i got the smartthings app working. It told me that installing apps from unknown services was unabled. It took me to a settings screen were i enable it and tried the downloand and installation again and it worked.
Can you tell me what version number you firmware is and the other info. I am hoping that I just didnât do something right but the OP said that he was having an issue based on different firmware or software
I got to the same point that you did but it wouldnât let me check the box to allow installation.
In the about secction it says its running version 4.3 build 1.0.202. In the security part does it let you check the âunknown sourcesâ part?
No it wonât let me :-(. I finally found my Bluetooth mouse and controller last night but didnât have time to see if I could get them paired. Iâm pretty bummed that everyone but me seems to be able to do this ⌠I guess I will have to try the ADB side load route.
Are you able to use the browser? Cuz if you are you could just use the browser to use the smarttiles page. Thats what i did. I wanted something more simple than the smartthings app. Instead of navigating through the app i just made a smarttiles page with all the stuff i mostly use.
Yes but after the download it just takes me to the screen where I am supposed to enable side loading and it wonât allow me to check the box
That is awesome ⌠I will give that a shot
So if you go into the settings in the Android mode then scroll to about phone open that and then go to build tap on it 5 times and you should be able to open up the developer menu which will allow you to enable apk downloads from untrusted sources or something like that. Then you can use the web browser to download In apk up SmartThings if you get to a point where you canât back out because thereâs no back button you just pulled the relay off of the clip that melts it and itâll reset and then you gotta hold the bottom button down for a minute while holding the proximity sensor once you see the Android screen you can look for the SmartThings app then open it.
This is great!
Which browser are you using in full screen mode? Do you know if this âhackâ works for any of the Wink Relays, or only a specific version number?
I was contemplating mounting a cheap kindle fire as a wall controller, but this is a much cleaner install, and in the end is probably cheaper than fire when you add up the time and cost of the mounting and charging solutions.
My relay must be like the OPs second device ⌠he mentioned that he was having issues with getting it to work. I have tried to enable developer options bunt must be locked out because no matter how many times I pressed the build number it did not enable the menu. I run a Nexus 6 and have rooted and ROMed phones since my droid x back in the day. It is frustrating to not be able to figure this out lol
Im using the âFull screen browserâ by klurige. First, I donât know if it works on all relays, Trenton_wilson says his is not letting him install apks. Second, consider all your options. I already had a wink hub which is why i tryied to make it work. Knowing that i will tell you all the cons using this has. First the relay it self wont go to sleep, It stays on all the time. I think the relay uses the proximity sensor as a way to bring it to the tablet mode which makes it unable to act as the proximity sensor for the screen. I tryied installing apks that use the peoximity sensor and the apps couldnât find it. I installed an app that dimmed the screen at certain time of the day which i guess is ok, but the screen is always on. Second the hardware buttons donât work with smartthings. If you wire a light to them you can turn it on and off just not from the smartthings app. I think the relay runs on wifi not zwave so thats why the smartthings hub canât communicate with them. Last, so far i have only found one browser that is full screen mode, it looks awsome but it has a litte bug. After about 10 seconds of inactivity it goes into what i think is an away mode. It looks normal, the screen is on and it shows all the buttons but for example if you want to turn on a light you will have to tap twise. One to wake it and on to turn the light on. Now knowing all that consider between getting a relay or a tablet. I personally like it and am ok with those cons, but then again i already had a relay. If on the other hand I were in your shoes i would do some serious thinking.
Thanks for the reality check. This makes it seem a lot less ideal. Given all the work people here are doing to make a decent wall mount tablet solution, it seems like this is a product idea for some one - a low end tablet with an integrated charger that fits in a standard wall box. I would happily pay $100 - $150 to buy one of these.
I mean I hate to sound like I donât like it, cuz I actually do. I kinda like that it is always on, it may not be the best thing because it might lower the screens life. But I mention it because what I like may not be what other people like or find useful, and I think that you should know what your getting yourself into before you go and buy one and end up not liking the way it works based on just a cool picture.
Ok so I found a way to make the proximity sensor work now. Also I found a fullscreen web browser that is much responsive. The only thing I cant get to work is the hardware buttons other than that everything is working good so far. I even made the browser start on startup and dont see the wink app run at all.
Joseph, do you have any instructions for the process to change the wink relay?
I just bought a second one yesterday and want to have it auto start the browser
Peter
How far along the process are you?
Havenât started. Just bought and didnât want to do anything that would brick the device
