Im going to get another SmartThings hub
I currently have had the V2 running for 5 -6 yrs and have had virtually no issues i recently got another V2 but it was a dud. It works but won’t download edge drivers.
Im wondering if i sind just buy a V3 instead of another V2. Would i be missing out on any future matter functionality or updates; just anything in general besides the wireless connectivity that i don’t need.
The V3 is actually better for Matter since it includes Thread radio for Matter over Thread devices (not that there’s a lot in the market right now but it’s good to have).
The V3 however has less memory, slower CPU and doesn’t have backup battery, but unless you have loooots of drivers installed or you have frequent power outages you may not notice it.
You could consider a ST Station instead with the caveat that it doesn’t support Z-Wave. If you don’t have/need Z-Wave, I think that would be my choice.
The Station not having Ethernet port is a red flag for me as main hub, but I guess I’m just old school.
Just to clarify… you should get the Aeotec Smart Home Hub for SmartThings and not the SmartThings 2018 v3 hub. The Aeotec hubs are cheaper than the V3 hubs when going through normal merchants such as Amazon.com or SmartMatters.co. SmartMatters also has used Aeotec hubs for $99.
There are many Zigbee/WiFi/Thread matter devices available now, increasing by the day!
I meant Matter over Thread specifically since the V3/Aeotec has Thread radio and the V2 does not.
There’s only one Matter over Thread brand for lights, a couple for smart plugs, and for sensors and smart buttons that is where it should excel there’s not much variety yet.
Matter over WiFi devices as well as bridged devices are supported by the V2 too.
I’d guess you were thinking of nanoleaf, but AIDot’s Mujoy line also has a matter over thread model, although they’re hard to find.
But yeah, there aren’t a lot yet.
