Should I wait for v3 hub? (STH-ETH-300)

That sounds like a kickstarter pitch from a software guy. :scream:

Unfortunately, hardware is hard. Those ā€œcheap chipsā€ are radios, and designing a box that can hold multiple radios of multiple protocols and still process all the messages is really hard.

There’s a reason neither Lowes nor smartthings turned on their Bluetooth antennas After initial set up. And even wink only uses Bluetooth with one device.

Running Wi-Fi, thread, zigbee, and Bluetooth all together all behind a big metal box like a refrigerator or a television is going to require a lot of engineering. Nobody has done it yet.

I’m not saying it will never be done, but I am saying it’s not easy.

Like one of my engineering professors used to say, ā€œphysics matters.ā€œ It’s not about what you can draw on a page, it’s about what you can run in real life.

Just sayin’…

Kinda makes you wonder how they are going to put those radios in a box full of speakers that most likely have metal frames and large magnets

I haven’t seen anything yet that says there are going to be zwave or zigbee radios inside the new galaxy home smart speaker. I’m not saying they won’t be, but I wouldn’t assume that there will be. I know, I know: ā€œthey called it a hubā€ But they called the refrigerator a hub, also, and it just has Wi-Fi.

Didn’t mean to imply it is ā€œeasyā€.

In fact, this is likely a case of upper management envisioning it, and just saying ā€œget it doneā€, regardless of the pushback from engineering.

Kinda like a certain CEO assumed (and felt comfortable unambiguously promising) SmartThings V1 to V2 migration could be implemented within 4 months of Hub V2 release.

So… I’m outlining what I believe is Samsung’s intended strategy. Hopefully they have enough ā€œPlans Bā€ while working on the challenges.

Just based on their history over the last four years, the SmartThings ā€œPlan Bā€œ has always been ā€œjust go ahead and release it anyway.ā€œ

Guess they couldn’t fit this into Unpacked yesterday

I’d love to know if they ever plan on using the Bluetooth radio or USB port for anything…

No new (working) presence sensor :sob::sob::sob:

I really hope this new hub is the trigger for a proper international rollout. We were told ST was coming down under 3 years ago…

Wow, it’s gonna retail for just 70 bucks.

I wonder if they’re feeling heat from amazon, which seems to be able to endlessly offer deep discounts on their own smart home hardware.

They’ve rolled out partnerships with Spanish, German and Korean partners, but nothing down under :slightly_frowning_face:

Where have you read about those partnerships? Just wondering what places I should be checking for news.

What about this? is this SmartThings v3??

Salivating…

Not one particular place.
Here is the Vodafone partnership that covers UK, Spain and Germany

Here’s the Singtel partnership for Korea

So the major difference I see is connection via Wi-Fi in addition to the option of Ethernet. Am I missing something?

Apart from the 3 or 4 other threads on this topic, no

:stuck_out_tongue:

This is what I have been waiting for and never received(hope they get this working/watching my house on my Samsung TV):

Yes. :sunglasses: There are significant technical improvements, particularly in the area of security. It’s not enough for most people to want to change from a V2 to a V3 if the V2 was working well, but it does mean that someone looking at the two side-by-side would probably choose the V3.

See the current active discussion, which includes some staff comments.

The 2018 hub has a slower processor and less memory. Not sure how would that affect the performance though. Side by side comparison is need before we can tell which one is better.
