Samsung to buy SmartThings

Ha thats interesting as they don’t actually show any product…

Best part:

Hasselhoff (after rolling aware from danger, talking to young 20-something cute girl): “Sorry… instincts… Knight Rider. You ever see Knight Rider?”

20-something: “I… think my dad may have mentioned it?”

I recently happened to have lunch with a guy who is high up in the Samsung accelerator program (and a acquihire of sorts himself), and was talking about the ST acquisition. From his view, ST was very different than anything they’ve done with the accelerator, and there was a real commitment to keep it separate, particularly given the high-profile and size of the deal. So that’s great - I’m hopeful and excited to see what comes. The backing of a huge tech company could propel ST to the forefront of a rapidly crowding market.

Congrats to the ST team, keep bringing us awesome stuff.

@Ben How is the “Samsung Smarthome” different from SmartThings? Or is it the same thing? I’m a little concerned, if it is the same thing, that all ST branding disappeared.

SmartThings - brand and company will be front and center — check out this blog post for more:

Samsung obviously had Smart Home initiatives underway before this acquisition. It will take a while for those projects to find their own path or get folded.

That’s BS. Samsung is not about proprietary. They’re about staying ahead of new innovations and staying on platforms that will work for all, if all want to be a part. When you speak of “proprietary”, You’re talking about Apple!
The word “Apple” should be defined as "proprietary."
Now yes, all companies will want their own work to be sold. But Samsung has been a champion when it comes to cost and keeping the biggest companies in check because their products are revolutionary, their products hang with the best and their products most of the time OWN the competition.
With the competition for home security in almost everywhere you look these days, It was only a matter of time before this little company got bought up.
Even COX communications is getting into the security business, but at a monthly charge.
But Samsung being proprietary? LOL. Really? You must be thinking Apple!

(Preface - I use both iOS and Android…and I’m in IT, so I straddle all sides of the OS environment… So, this isn’t a flame war, just an observation from a 20 year IT veteran)

Just a note here - both Samsung and Apple are both open and proprietary. Both adopt and support open standards. For Samsung, they support Android (not really a standard, but close enough) and a host of other standards. For Apple, great examples include their giant push for H.264 HTML5 (open) to eliminate Flash (proprietary and the bane of an IT departments existence). Both can also be proprietary - Samsung Shape and Apple Airplay.

They are proprietary or open depending on how it benefits them.

In SmartThings’ case, it would appear that Samsung sees the extreme benefit of open. They can make their own products under the open standard and potentially sell even more. I hate being locked down in proprietary. Sometimes it is a necessary evil. Other times it is just plain dumb.

Listen, buddy… we’re having a very nice little flame war here. I’d appreciate if you’d take your logic and reason and go some place else, okay?

I think they both are  But if you read the entire thread I am actually one of the few FOR the sammy takeover. I am excited about it!!!

What i meant by “proprietary” is sticking it only on sammy devices and thats it. Which both samsung and apple are known to do. In this case it seems Sammy will not be locking it down to only Samsung devices.

@dbmet, @geko The nest + google + sumsung privacy issue is a concern to us all. You can always support the creation of a free open source smart hub and smart thermostat alternative currently on up kickstarter. It replaces your thermostat with a smart thermostat alternative with smart home features. You can find it at www.bemo.io/kickstarter

There are potentially exciting things going on in home automation. Microsoft partnered with insteaon, Google and Apple seem to be putting their hats into the ring a bit, and Samsung purchased Smartthings. These things can either be game changers or a hindrance. If Samsung makes Smartthings more proprietary as they have done with their appliance control system, then it would be a travesty. If they use their power and the Smartthings platform to really take home automation where it has been struggling to be for Decades. More products are coming out than ever and the price of them has been coming down. More and more devices are coming with wifi, Bluetooth, z wave, and other connectivity platforms. If one of these companies really breaks out and allows a user to control all of these technologies under one app or platform, it would be a game changer. If these big companies use these recent partnerships to remain proprietary, it would be a travesty. If they open it wide up to integrate everything, it can be AWSOME. I do think that many of these companies will use these platforms to try to enter your home and enter even more deeply into our private lives seeing you as nothing more than a consumer and milking every bit of information they can use against you and sell about you against you. Lets not forget how big brother invasive government has already forced cell phone companies to surrender all of your information on you down to tracking your every move. This could end up being a very bad thing. Only time will tell, but I think.

Samsung currently has a product to connect their appliances and has kept it proprietary. Only time will tell.
