I’d like to give guests access to run several routines in the house without enabling them to change smartthings settings. For example, turn lights on and off in the living and dining rooms. Is there a way of locking smarthings down in this way, either within the app itself, or using widgets? I’d like to use an old Android tablet restricted to just enable access to this restricted list of routines.
That’s what smart buttons and switches are for.
You could use Sharptools and set up a dashboard.
Thanks Ken, I’ve not come across that before, I’ll take a look!
True, but then I have to buy both a smart switch and likely a hub, too…
Do you have any Echo devices? Set up Alexa phrases to let them run routines?
You can create guest account at ST and add it to your hub, same as other family members. After that you can control what can guest member do
That sounds promising - I’d have to buy a hub, but those can be found cheaply on ebay. Certainly cheaper than all the other options listed, given I don’t currently have any hub, I just have meross devices that connect to my phone via ST.
I might also give Home Assistant a go, as I can install it on my home NAS - zero cost but likely more time consuming to set up.
You will get option to give device specific access with expiration date. Load that account to some tablet and leave it guest room.
Is a hub required to create a guest account to access cloud to cloud devices such as Meross?
I don’t think so. You can try. Create guest email, for example jkpguest@gmail.com, and then create Samsung account using google account. Send invite to jkpguest@gmail.com, go to gmail and accept the invite.
Adjust access for guest account and login on guest device with jkpguest@gmail.com account. That is all it takes
You can restrict access to particular devices and Routines that don’t include those devices are not displayed. However, some Routines that don’t include devices but do include changing location mode or setting STHM will be shown.
Since restricted users can’t execute Routines directly, my suggestion would be to create virtual devices to act as triggers for your Routines and make the action(s) for those Routines turning on/off the desired devices. If you have a voice assistant, then your visitors can tell them to turn on/off the virtual control device by name.
Not had loads of time to continue this journey yet, but I’m posting a quick update on a couple of things I’ve found so far in case they are helpful to others. Using old devices locked down for guests may work, but I hit the snag of Smartthings having a minimum requirement for Android 11 - so the device can’t be too old!
Additionally, when I created a second user on a newer Galaxy Tab, Smartthings wouldn’t install; it looks like it needs to be on the primary user account of any device.
More soon, once I have more time for testing!
You can use sharptools on older devices
