Total noob here - so in the Amazon review for the one that used to be sold, a person shows the inside of this and lists what you would need to build this. I’m not seeing a relay on this one. Am I missing something?

It will work without a relay. I tested with 3 to 5.5 VDC across the Reed switch and with power applied. You will get a closed.
I just don’t feel comfortable applying an external power source to the battery circuit hence the relay. I didn’t look deep into the circuitry but the battery stayed at 3.3VDC with 5.5VDC applied across the switch. Probably there’s a reverse diode in there.
