I’ve had great luck with the First Alert ZCOMBO detector, so was disappointed when I went to replace an expired one to find it’s discontinued. Does anyone know of a solid detector that’s available in the US?
Here’s what I can find:
First Alert SMCO410. Apparently the replacement for ZCOMBO, but best I can tell doesn’t work, especially with a V2 hub? Anyone know if this has been fixed or is expected to be?
Frient - not available in US
Aquara - not available in US
Heiman S1-M - Smoke only, no CO. Not familiar with the brand and am a little leary of something that has a Works With “SmarThings” logo on their Amazon page… Also unclear if it will work properly from previous post?
WARROXIDE - some bad reviews, not familiar with the brand, not sure if it works with ST
I should have mentioned… unfortunately there’s no wiring so I need a battery solution and can’t use the Zooz. But thank you for the suggestion.
I should also note that I had looked at sensors that listen for the alarm sound and communicate that to SmartThings, but am very concerned about the reliability and possible false alarms with that approach.
I recently bought the new Matter/Thread version of the Heiman CO detector. Where the previous Zigbee version failed in all areas (it’s a Tuya footprint with no known driver), this one works just fine with SmartThings.
Onboarding was as easy as can be (just that Alexa got in the way having auto-detected it too while I was onboarding it in SmartThings), and SmartThings fully adopted it as a CO sensor, including it in Home Monitor - Smoke with all the other smoke detectors I already had.
Thanks Peter! I’m not seeing that one as available in the US, but their S1-M smoke detector shows as Matter/Thread compatible.
Pardon my ignorance here as I haven’t dealt with Matter devices before… am I understanding correctly I need to either upgrade to a V3 hub or add something like a SmartThings Station?
I don’t have any other devices that can act as a thread border router. So best I can tell it looks like there are three options (sorry, this is maybe more to get my thoughts straight, but hopefully this is helpful for anyone looking at this thread in the future…)
Buy a new device of some sort that can act as a Thread border router and use a Matter compatible detector (which currently appears to mean buying separate Heiman smoke and CO devices). Looks like the Smartthing Station is effectively discontinued so no longer an option.
Buy a V3 Aeotec hub, keep my V2 hub with a dual hub setup so I don’t have to deal with the V3 memory limitations, and only pair any Matter/Thread stuff to the V3. Buy the two Heiman devices above or roll the dice with a First Alert SMCO410 not being one of the ones that disconnects all the time.
Buy a V4 Aeotec hub, keep my V2 hub with a dual hub setup for Z-Wave devices and Buy the two Heiman devices above.
This got way more complicated (and expensive) than I’d expected!
Are there any US available alarms that can also be interconnected? This is a code requirement in most of the country and the biggest reason that I won’t install these “smart” detectors in my house. For me, it is much more important that all my alarms go off in a fire than gettting a notification on my phone.
Would the Zooz Zen55 mentioned above work in your situation? My understanding is that it’s specifically intended for existing interconnected systems, you just add it to the last one in the chain and it lets you connect your existing “dumb” detectors.
SmartThings Home Monitor can be configured to fire the alarm on all of them when one of them triggers. [Note: Please check whether this kind of mechanism meets the regulatory rules you’re facing.]
For this to work, the devices need to have the alarm siren as an actionable item in SmartThings. The Frient (Zigbee) and Heiman (Matter) devices do have that.
Yes I have home monitor already setup with the old Halo Zigbee Hardwired smoke detectors. The Frient and Heiman are not hardwired.
I think the issue now is the regulations, but not sure. Halo went out of business but their driver still works. Will keep them as long as I can, but they are nearing the 10 year mark so I want to be proactive.
For notifiication of alarms, yes, that works. I would really hope that someday, 10 years after I setup Smartthings, that there would be a smart, line voltage, interconnected smoke and CO alarm.
