1. basic Tstats do not argue. Suggest Radio Thermostat CT100/Zwave or CT50/Wifi has good support in ST, not supercheap or basic but less than $100 each. I think CT50 has the advantage of independent remote management - when you see all 3 Tstats in the native phone app, I bet most people like it pretty good uh-huh.

[OBSOLETE] Filtrete 3M-50 Wi-Fi Thermostat. Version 2.0 Released 12/17/2016

If you happen to have [Filtrete 3M-50 Wi-Fi Thermostat][1], you can now connect it to SmartThings. They used to sell at Home Depot for $99, but now seem to be discontinued. I used to have it integrated with Vera, but since I switched to ST, I could only control it remotely with the Radio Thermostat mobile app, which is, by the way, very well done. And now, I have fully integrated it with SmartThings. Filtrete 3M-50 is the same as RT CT50, and this devicetype also works with RT CT80, you just don’t get remote humidity.

2. Zwave probly ok as-is, or plug-in extender.

3. use a mechanical strap-on Tstat instead, and monitor it with Zwave sensor if you want. It is pointlessly complicated to require your Zwave to operate your temperature safety control.
