I am interested in putting a smartthings multipurpose sensor (or something similar) on my garage door and possibly in the fridge as well. It can get very cold here (Worst case outside temp is probably around -40, not sure what the garage temperature would be) so I have two concerns
Is there a minimum operating temperature for the sensors?
Will battery life be significantly impacted? (My guess is yes)
I have the Aeon Multisense outside. Last weekend it got down to -5F. I got a low battery alert saying 1% left. This was on Alkaline batteries. At the time of this writing it’s now 24.5F and it’s showing 30% left. I didn’t change the batteries.
This on my sensor:
Within each sensor is an incremental temperature sensor capable of accurately measuring between -10~50°C (14 to 122°F). I can’t find “operating” temp.
The minimum operating temperature can vary for each individual model. You just have to look at the manufacturer’s specifications.
As far as the smartthings sensor itself, many people do use it in freezers and refrigerators with good success, although it does vary. See the following topic (this is a clickable link):
